numbers of people who died from these diseases which are estimated to be attributable to
smoking. During 2009 it was estimated that 198 deaths were registered (105 of them
before the age of 75 years) that were caused by lung cancer and were directly attributable
to smoking, and a further 148 deaths (48 before the age of 75 years) caused by COPD
which were directly attributable to smoking. Overall, in Hull it was estimated that around
550 deaths (and just over 230 premature deaths) were registered during 2009 which were
due to smoking, i.e. just over 46 per month of which 19 were premature deaths.

For deaths registered during 2009, there were 606 deaths for men aged under 75 years,
641 for men aged 75+ years, 356 deaths for women aged under 75 years and 842 for
women aged 75+ years. The total number of deaths to Hull residents that were
registered during the calendar year 2009 was 2,445 of which 962 were before the age of
75 years. Therefore, it is estimated that in 2009 approximately 23% of all deaths and
24% of all premature deaths in Hull were attributable to smoking. Note that many more
deaths will be due to smoking-related illnesses as Table 101 includes only a proportion
of these deaths (e.g. only 22% of ischaemic heart disease deaths in men – see Table
96).
