10.9.2.2 Civic Engagement
Civic engagement is a measure of the degree to which people participate in community
life, and the extent to which they feel empowered to change their society. Figure 232
examines the percentages of residents who feel that they are well-informed about things
which affect their local area and who feel that they can influence local decisions that
affect their area. There was little difference between men and women in relation to
being well informed or feelings about ability to influence local decisions being made, but
there were quite large differences among the age groups. The youngest age group felt
the least informed and fewer of them felt they could influence local decisions, and whilst
the percentage who felt well informed increased with age so that the eldest felt the most
informed, this pattern was not the same in relation to influencing decisions. The middle
age group (45-54) had the highest percentage who felt they could influence decisions
(41%), with the youngest and oldest age groups having the lowest percentages (26%
and 32% respectively). Feeling informed or able to influence decisions increased as
deprivation decreased. The underlying data are given in the APPENDIX on page 932.
