9.2 Influenza and Pneumococcal Vaccinations
9.2.1 Influenza Vaccination
The Winter Influenza campaign for the elderly was started during 2000/01 when persons
aged 75+ years were encouraged to have an influenza vaccination. The age limit was
lowered the next winter to those aged 65+ years. The target uptake was 70% and
uptake was recorded by the Humber Health Protection Unit (Humber Health Protection
Unit, 2006). Uptake for Eastern Hull PCT was 70%, 71%, 75% and 75% for 2002/2003,
2003/2004, 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 respectively. For West Hull PCT uptake was
68%, 86%, 72% and 73% for 2002/2003, 2003/2004, 2004/2005 and 2005/2006
respectively.
More recent information is available in the World Class Commissioning datapacks
published September 2009 provided by the Information Centre (Information Centre for
Health and Social Care 2009) on the percentage of those aged 65+ years who were
vaccinated for influenza. Table 175 presents this information for 2006/2007 and
2007/2008 for Hull and comparator areas (see section 3.3.3 on page 44 for more about
comparator areas). The uptake in Hull is similar to comparator PCTs.

The percentage uptake for 2009/2010 is available from the Information Centre
(Information Centre for Health and Social Care 2010). Table 176 gives these
vaccinations rates for Hull and comparators areas. Uptake between October 2009 and
January 2010 for Hull is slightly higher than the comparator areas, being 6 th highest out
of the 23 comparators listed.
