This has not, <strong>of</strong> course, meant complete autonomy. But it has meant a considerable<br />

degree <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependence, allow<strong>in</strong>g us to fund the writ<strong>in</strong>g centre securely<br />

and at the same time implement efficiencies that take discipl<strong>in</strong>ary ideals<br />

<strong>in</strong>to account. Orig<strong>in</strong>ally, for <strong>in</strong>stance, centre adm<strong>in</strong>istration and the teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

tutors required the time <strong>of</strong> two <strong>in</strong>structors; when we created a permanent staff<br />

position for the Computer <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Lab, we not only freed up faculty time but<br />

also ga<strong>in</strong>ed technological expertise and more efficient management <strong>of</strong> tutor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>tments. The decision to rely on paid tutor<strong>in</strong>g also resulted <strong>in</strong> greater efficiency<br />

and helped compensate for the dim<strong>in</strong>ishment <strong>of</strong> WAC. At one time,<br />

the opportunity to tutor was available only to students tak<strong>in</strong>g an array <strong>of</strong> practicum<br />

courses, an arrangement that reduced our pool <strong>of</strong> tutors to Education and<br />

English students, prioritized the learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the tutor over the learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the<br />

tutee, limited tutor<strong>in</strong>g time available to a few weeks each term (usually, Fall<br />

and W<strong>in</strong>ter terms only), and drew heavily on department teach<strong>in</strong>g resources.<br />

Comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g paid tutor<strong>in</strong>g with much shorter preparation courses opened the<br />

door to a wider range <strong>of</strong> students (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those <strong>in</strong> requirement-heavy science<br />

programs), <strong>in</strong>creased tutor<strong>in</strong>g hours, and significantly reduced the demands on<br />

faculty time. As a result, we now attract peer tutors from across the discipl<strong>in</strong>es,<br />

well-prepared to address the diversity <strong>of</strong> student need (two-thirds <strong>of</strong> those who<br />

come to the Centre have been referred by colleagues <strong>in</strong> other departments).<br />

One faculty member alone is responsible for teach<strong>in</strong>g, hir<strong>in</strong>g, and supervis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

tutors and for what we might call “public relations”: ask<strong>in</strong>g our colleagues to<br />

let good writers know about tutor<strong>in</strong>g opportunities, weak students about opportunities<br />

for help, and keep<strong>in</strong>g them well-<strong>in</strong>formed about the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples and<br />

benefits <strong>of</strong> peer tutor<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

THE CURRENT STATE OF THE DEPARTMENT<br />

AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS<br />

The Department now has a full-time faculty <strong>of</strong> fourteen. Six are <strong>in</strong>structors,<br />

with no contractual obligation to publish. For them, the development <strong>of</strong><br />

a major has been pr<strong>of</strong>essionally <strong>in</strong>vigorat<strong>in</strong>g, provid<strong>in</strong>g new opportunities for<br />

research as they prepare for advanced courses. For the eight <strong>of</strong> us <strong>in</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>essoriate,<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g new courses has been similarly <strong>in</strong>vigorat<strong>in</strong>g, and so too has<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g students who share our passion for rhetoric and composition. But just<br />

as important is that we have been relieved <strong>of</strong> the constant work <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>vent<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

place for ourselves <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>stitution, now that <strong>in</strong>dependence, departmental status,<br />

and the major are faits accomplis. The result has been accelerated research<br />

productivity: we are publish<strong>in</strong>g on visual rhetoric, journalism, gay and lesbian<br />
