way to bolster both recruitment and retention efforts; and, secondly, to assist<br />

faculty across discipl<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> their efforts to teach with writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

In mov<strong>in</strong>g forward and develop<strong>in</strong>g new <strong>in</strong>itiatives, we have been careful<br />

to ensure that they do <strong>in</strong>deed enhance these two areas <strong>of</strong> our core mission. As<br />

we cont<strong>in</strong>ue to develop writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terventions <strong>in</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>ary modules, we will<br />

recruit postgraduate students from with<strong>in</strong> the discipl<strong>in</strong>es to help create and deliver<br />

such <strong>in</strong>terventions, a task which will become easier as the culture <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

is developed. In her evaluation, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Zawacki recommended the development<br />

<strong>of</strong> a <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Fellows programme to this end. Equally, we will strive<br />

to help staff to nurture these important writ<strong>in</strong>g skills <strong>in</strong> their own classrooms<br />

rather than always call<strong>in</strong>g on the experts to <strong>in</strong>tervene. This will entail support<strong>in</strong>g<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>ary staff through ongo<strong>in</strong>g workshops on teach<strong>in</strong>g with writ<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

by populat<strong>in</strong>g our website with useful support materials and resources.<br />

CONCLUSION<br />

The primary research carried out at the <strong>in</strong>ception <strong>of</strong> the project highlighted<br />

evidence <strong>of</strong> a non-systematic approach to writ<strong>in</strong>g development and support;<br />

it suggested that writ<strong>in</strong>g was not gett<strong>in</strong>g the attention it needed, despite its<br />

centrality to success at third level and its impact on students’ pr<strong>of</strong>essional lives.<br />

The Regional <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre at UL now provides a coord<strong>in</strong>ated, systematic<br />

approach to the teach<strong>in</strong>g, learn<strong>in</strong>g and research <strong>of</strong> academic writ<strong>in</strong>g and to academic<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g support across the region, support<strong>in</strong>g undergraduate and postgraduate<br />

student writers and collaborat<strong>in</strong>g with faculty to expand writ<strong>in</strong>g-based<br />

curriculum <strong>in</strong>novations. The <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre’s activities work towards enhanc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the quality and effectiveness <strong>of</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g and research across the region,<br />

while enhanc<strong>in</strong>g the student experience. In its short existence, the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre<br />

has become an essential part <strong>of</strong> the regional landscape and is now recognised<br />

as a unique centre <strong>of</strong> expertise and knowledge <strong>in</strong> Ireland.<br />

All <strong>of</strong> the efforts to ensure susta<strong>in</strong>ability highlighted here<strong>in</strong> culm<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>in</strong><br />

the presentation <strong>of</strong> a three-year bus<strong>in</strong>ess/academic plan for the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre<br />

to the University Executive Committee. At the time <strong>of</strong> the writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> this<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ile, it was announced that the Executive Committee, after much time and<br />

deliberation, had agreed to ma<strong>in</strong>stream the Regional <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre at UL.<br />

Consortium partners may wish to <strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong> the writ<strong>in</strong>g expertise <strong>of</strong>fered by<br />

the Regional <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre at UL, follow<strong>in</strong>g a shared-services model, thereby<br />

benefit<strong>in</strong>g from, yet avoid<strong>in</strong>g the full cost <strong>of</strong>, programmes developed through<br />

UL writ<strong>in</strong>g expertise. <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Consultants from UL will work with staff <strong>in</strong> each<br />

<strong>of</strong> these <strong>in</strong>stitutions to develop writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itiatives there<strong>in</strong>. Such expertise may<br />
