University <strong>of</strong> Education, Freiburg, and European University Viadr<strong>in</strong>a (Germany)<br />

The grow<strong>in</strong>g impact Katr<strong>in</strong> has had on <strong>in</strong>stitutional development at EUV<br />

with regard to writ<strong>in</strong>g over the years doesn’t stop at the gates <strong>of</strong> the university,<br />

but bridges the traditional gap between higher and secondary education.<br />

Through the project “high school writ<strong>in</strong>g coaches” she <strong>in</strong>itiates and facilitates<br />

the development <strong>of</strong> high school writ<strong>in</strong>g centers staffed with high school students,<br />

an approach that has been developed <strong>in</strong> Europe through the Scriptorium<br />

project, led by the Freiburg <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Center (Bräuer, 2009). Sponsored by the<br />

Robert Bosch foundation, high school students <strong>of</strong> two different partner schools<br />

visit the writ<strong>in</strong>g center at EUV and get a three-day tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> peer tutor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

methods. Afterwards, the high school students work for one year as peer tutors<br />

at their schools. They are supervised by two students <strong>of</strong> the EUV writ<strong>in</strong>g center.<br />

After one year a new group <strong>of</strong> high school students will be tra<strong>in</strong>ed to become<br />

peer tutors <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g. Teachers <strong>of</strong> the schools are tra<strong>in</strong>ed as well. A long-term<br />

goal is to establish writ<strong>in</strong>g centers at these high schools.<br />

With this said, it becomes very obvious that Katr<strong>in</strong>’s <strong>in</strong>itiative for shap<strong>in</strong>g<br />

autonomous academic writ<strong>in</strong>g groups laid the foundation for a slowly-chang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

role <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the university and the formation <strong>of</strong> new curricular structures<br />

support<strong>in</strong>g writers and creat<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>able support <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

4. The German “Hausarbeit” causes many problems because students have to manage<br />

these demand<strong>in</strong>g research papers without support dur<strong>in</strong>g vacations.<br />

5. For adjunct teachers, who tend to take on more and more university classes <strong>in</strong><br />

Germany, this is all—you are not paid for the time you need to prepare the lessons or<br />

to read and comment on the papers, you just work for the honour <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g a university<br />

teacher. Young teachers <strong>of</strong>ten are not paid at all.<br />
