Kathleen McMillan, Director <strong>of</strong> Personal Learn<strong>in</strong>g for University Success<br />

at the University <strong>of</strong> Dundee, Scotland, has co-authored (with Jonathan Weyers)<br />

books on academic literacies; most recently, Study Skills for International<br />

Students. With Bill Kirton, the first Royal Literary Fund <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Fellow at the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Dundee, she has co-authored Just Right, a guide to tackl<strong>in</strong>g university<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g assignments.<br />

Sally Mitchell coord<strong>in</strong>ates the Th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> team at Queen Mary,<br />

University <strong>of</strong> London. She is currently conduct<strong>in</strong>g a study, with Sue Hudd at<br />

Qu<strong>in</strong>nipiac University, Connecticut (US), <strong>of</strong> how higher education <strong>in</strong>stitutions<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k about and situate writ<strong>in</strong>g development <strong>in</strong>itiatives, particularly <strong>in</strong> relation<br />

to their broader agendas for teach<strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Désirée Motta-Roth, Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> English and Applied L<strong>in</strong>guistics<br />

at the Federal University at Santa Maria, Brazil, heads the Read<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

<strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Laboratory. Research<strong>in</strong>g for the Brazilian National Council for Scientific<br />

and Technological Development, she has written/co-edited books and<br />

articles on genre and discourse theory and multiliteracies.<br />

Estela Inés Moyano’s research areas are the discourse <strong>of</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>es and academic<br />

literacy at different educational levels. At the Universidad Nacional de<br />

General Sarmiento (Argent<strong>in</strong>a), she has designed and led a literacy program<br />

across the university curriculum (PRODEAC). The pedagogic device for teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

literacy that she developed for this program has also been adapted to teach<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>es through read<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g at different educational levels.<br />

Elizabeth Narváez Cardona has led academic writ<strong>in</strong>g and scientific publication<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses for students and pr<strong>of</strong>essors at Universidad Autónoma de<br />

Occidente. She is conduct<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>ter-<strong>in</strong>stitutional research project Why do we<br />

read and write at the Colombian University? A contribution to the academic culture<br />

<strong>of</strong> the nation, funded by the Colombian Department <strong>of</strong> Science, Technology<br />

and Innovation (COLCIENCIAS).<br />

Lucía Natale is an applied l<strong>in</strong>guist who specialises <strong>in</strong> language education,<br />

especially <strong>in</strong> early and academic literacy. Her research <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong>clude writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g and discourse analysis. She is a Lecturer at the Universidad Nacional<br />

de General Sarmiento (Argent<strong>in</strong>a), where she coord<strong>in</strong>ates an <strong>in</strong>stitutional program<br />

for develop<strong>in</strong>g read<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g across the curriculum.<br />

Peter Nelson’s background is <strong>in</strong> Education (TESOL) and Applied L<strong>in</strong>guistics,<br />

where he has worked both <strong>in</strong> Australia and <strong>in</strong>ternationally. For 15 years,<br />

he has coord<strong>in</strong>ated the Language and Learn<strong>in</strong>g Unit <strong>in</strong> International Student<br />

Services at Queensland University <strong>of</strong> Technology, Brisbane. The unit collabo-<br />
