In this chapter, two literacy development projects will be <strong>in</strong>troduced<br />

as a means <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stitutional development with regard to the<br />

role <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> higher education and beyond. In the first portrait<br />

Katr<strong>in</strong> Girgensohn presents Gerd Bräuer’s model <strong>of</strong> literacy management.<br />

Through Gerd’s eyes, she will shed light on the role <strong>of</strong> a specialist,<br />

called “literacy manager,” whose pr<strong>of</strong>ile is tak<strong>in</strong>g shape <strong>in</strong> educational<br />

and pr<strong>of</strong>essional sett<strong>in</strong>gs as someone to <strong>in</strong>itiate and facilitate<br />

substantial change not only <strong>in</strong> the daily practice <strong>of</strong> writers and readers<br />

but <strong>in</strong> the literacy culture <strong>of</strong> entire <strong>in</strong>stitutions. In the second portrait<br />

Gerd Bräuer presents Katr<strong>in</strong> Girgensohn as a pioneer <strong>of</strong> literacy management<br />

and her model <strong>of</strong> autonomous academic writ<strong>in</strong>g groups <strong>in</strong><br />

Germany’s higher education. Through Katr<strong>in</strong>’s eyes, he will shed light<br />

especially on the role <strong>of</strong> the faculty and the writ<strong>in</strong>g center <strong>in</strong> facilitat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

such groups <strong>of</strong> writers.<br />

When Gerd, who grew up <strong>in</strong> the former East Germany and had also lived<br />

for several years <strong>in</strong> Prague (Czech Republic), jo<strong>in</strong>ed the University <strong>of</strong> Oregon <strong>in</strong><br />

1992 as a post-doctoral fellow, he had no clue about what literacy management<br />

could mean. As a matter <strong>of</strong> fact, at that time he had barely started to grasp a<br />

notion <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g pedagogy. As he says himself, look<strong>in</strong>g back, at his research on<br />

US writ<strong>in</strong>g pedagogy dur<strong>in</strong>g the early 1990s, writ<strong>in</strong>g pedagogy for him at that<br />

time was merely teach<strong>in</strong>g methods and techniques related to creative writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
