WHAT HAVE BEEN OUR INSTITUTION’S SUCCESSES AND<br />

FAILURES IN TEACHING WRITING/STUDENT LITERACY?<br />

Look<strong>in</strong>g at the overall writ<strong>in</strong>g curriculum on the translation study programme,<br />

it is fair to say that writ<strong>in</strong>g has become a central concern. It has to<br />

be seen <strong>in</strong> the context <strong>of</strong> other <strong>in</strong>novations that needed to be <strong>in</strong>troduced,<br />

such as <strong>in</strong>dependent learn<strong>in</strong>g and research-based teach<strong>in</strong>g. A special issue <strong>in</strong><br />

any translation programme is the presence <strong>of</strong> students with different mother<br />

tongues as well as <strong>of</strong> bil<strong>in</strong>gual students who speak several languages at a native<br />

or near-native level. What has not yet been accomplished is a closer <strong>in</strong>terrelation<br />

<strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g and multil<strong>in</strong>gualism. At the moment, writ<strong>in</strong>g is still performed<br />

separately <strong>in</strong> each language. <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> L1 and L2 has still not been l<strong>in</strong>ked<br />

with translat<strong>in</strong>g and multil<strong>in</strong>gual publish<strong>in</strong>g. The creation <strong>of</strong> such a learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

environment would be helpful not only to ga<strong>in</strong> a better understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> how<br />

language-related literacies may be <strong>in</strong>terconnected but also to develop new forms<br />

<strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>struction.<br />
