needs and goals <strong>of</strong> the participants. Interaction is organized through a set <strong>of</strong><br />

agreements that are either preset by a facilitator (<strong>of</strong>ten represent<strong>in</strong>g an educational<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitution) or negotiated and agreed upon by the members <strong>of</strong> the writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

group. <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> groups <strong>in</strong> a more structured format, guided by a workshop<br />

leader/facilitator, are an important element <strong>of</strong> the so-called Reform Pedagogy<br />

developed s<strong>in</strong>ce the 1920s especially <strong>in</strong> alternative educational sett<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> the<br />

German-speak<strong>in</strong>g area <strong>of</strong> Europe (e.g., Fre<strong>in</strong>et pedagogy). Under the term<br />

“Schreibwerkstatt,” the concept <strong>of</strong> guided group work <strong>in</strong> process writ<strong>in</strong>g saw a<br />

renaissance <strong>in</strong> the 1980s and is an <strong>in</strong>tegrated conceptual aspect <strong>of</strong> today’s writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

centers throughout the educational pyramid.<br />

Based on this precedent, Katr<strong>in</strong> Girgensohn (2007) developed and thoroughly<br />

assessed a concept for autonomous writ<strong>in</strong>g groups <strong>in</strong> higher education,<br />

which forms one <strong>of</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong> pillars <strong>of</strong> the writ<strong>in</strong>g center at the Europe University<br />

Viadr<strong>in</strong>a <strong>in</strong> Frankfurt/Oder (Germany, http://www.europa-uni.de/de/<br />

campus/hilfen/schreibzentrum/<strong>in</strong>dex.html). Girgensohn merits recognition for<br />

strengthen<strong>in</strong>g the self-dependent aspect <strong>of</strong> the orig<strong>in</strong>al writ<strong>in</strong>g group approach<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Reform Pedagogy by ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the potential <strong>of</strong> peer learn<strong>in</strong>g and collaboration<br />

(Bruffee, 1984) and the pedagogical power <strong>of</strong> learner communities<br />

(Lave & Wenger, 1991). Meanwhile, Girgensohn’s concept has been adopted<br />

by several German-speak<strong>in</strong>g universities (see also my <strong>in</strong>terview with Katr<strong>in</strong> Girgensohn<br />

<strong>in</strong> this book)<br />

TENDENCY 6: SUPPORT OF OTHER STUDY SKILLS<br />

Universities not only started to realize the importance <strong>of</strong> facilitat<strong>in</strong>g writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and writers but also the development <strong>of</strong> other key competences <strong>of</strong> academic<br />

work, e.g., read<strong>in</strong>g, e-learn<strong>in</strong>g, digital text production, language learn<strong>in</strong>g, learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to learn, plus competences to safeguard success <strong>in</strong> enter<strong>in</strong>g the pr<strong>of</strong>ession<br />

(e.g., writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> proposals and applications). Competences that directly <strong>in</strong>fluence<br />

the quality <strong>of</strong> academic writ<strong>in</strong>g have been central aims not only <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

centers but also <strong>of</strong> academic skills centers or language centers. The latter <strong>in</strong>stitution<br />

sometimes emerges from an exist<strong>in</strong>g writ<strong>in</strong>g center, as it may be the case <strong>in</strong><br />

the near future at the University <strong>of</strong> Education <strong>in</strong> Berne (Switzerland), or out <strong>of</strong><br />

orig<strong>in</strong>al plans to pursue a writ<strong>in</strong>g center, as seen at the University <strong>of</strong> Freiburg<br />

(Germany). Which format the <strong>in</strong>stitution support<strong>in</strong>g writ<strong>in</strong>g and writers f<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

adopts <strong>of</strong>ten depends on long-term strategic decisions and goals, as can be witnessed<br />

at the Language Center <strong>of</strong> the Technical University <strong>of</strong> Darmstadt, where<br />

research and development <strong>of</strong> concepts <strong>of</strong> multil<strong>in</strong>gualism clearly dom<strong>in</strong>ate the<br />

way academic writers are be<strong>in</strong>g supported with<strong>in</strong> the “SchreibCenter” and the<br />

Onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Lab (http://www.owl.tu-darmstadt.de).<br />
