Development, Religious Studies, English, Film and Media, Law, Botany, Nurs<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Civil Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, Environmental and Geographical Sciences, Sociology.<br />

These are academics well-tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g writ<strong>in</strong>g and academic argument.<br />

Seven <strong>of</strong> these young academics were <strong>in</strong>terviewed to ascerta<strong>in</strong> the degree to<br />

which the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre had prepared them for and facilitated their entry <strong>in</strong>to<br />

academia. All commented on the significance <strong>of</strong> the Centre to the development<br />

<strong>of</strong> their pre-exist<strong>in</strong>g ideas <strong>of</strong> academic discourse, particularly the barrier that<br />

this specialized discourse can pose to second-language English speakers. In addition<br />

to academic discourse, they felt they benefited from their <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre<br />

experience <strong>in</strong>s<strong>of</strong>ar as it improved their own research, writ<strong>in</strong>g and teach<strong>in</strong>g. It<br />

did this by allow<strong>in</strong>g them to appreciate a wide number <strong>of</strong> different discipl<strong>in</strong>es,<br />

to be explicitly aware <strong>of</strong> the rules that they took for granted <strong>in</strong> their own writ<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

and to shift the focus <strong>of</strong> their teach<strong>in</strong>g from “teacher-centred” to “learnercentred.”<br />

The specific experience <strong>of</strong> one-on-one teach<strong>in</strong>g was beneficial <strong>in</strong> this<br />

regard. The Centre was regarded by all <strong>in</strong>terviewed as a critically important<br />

space for mentor<strong>in</strong>g new academics.<br />

The <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre is a very important mentor<strong>in</strong>g space.<br />

<strong>Academic</strong>s generally aren’t taught how to teach. The writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

centre certa<strong>in</strong>ly made me more aware <strong>of</strong> how to deal with<br />

students and especially where they experience difficulties. It<br />

was also useful to see students from across the academic spectrum<br />

and different faculties. You realise that there are certa<strong>in</strong><br />

academic norms regardless <strong>of</strong> the department.<br />

By tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g young academics, <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centres can facilitate equity appo<strong>in</strong>tments<br />

<strong>in</strong> higher education <strong>in</strong> South Africa, and also contribute to chang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

these teach<strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g environments.<br />

CONCLUSIONS AND FUTURE PLANS<br />

<strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centres need to be grounded <strong>in</strong> critical discourses <strong>in</strong> order to<br />

understand and articulate <strong>in</strong>dividual cases and <strong>in</strong>stitutional practices. I have<br />

shown how we pursued this at UCT by develop<strong>in</strong>g a common theoretical basis<br />

through the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> consultants. This sense <strong>of</strong> common purpose needs to<br />

be <strong>in</strong>culcated nationally. Although <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centres <strong>in</strong> South African tertiary<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions have been operat<strong>in</strong>g for a good few years, it is only recently that<br />

<strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre practitioners have come together more as a community. There<br />

are now regional group<strong>in</strong>gs that meet regularly, an active listserv and national<br />
