This pr<strong>of</strong>ile describes the eventful history over twenty-five years <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Interdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Center <strong>of</strong> the InterAmerican University <strong>of</strong><br />

Puerto Rico. The Center, the first <strong>in</strong> Puerto Rico and committed to develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

students’ writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> both Spanish and English, flourished for<br />

several years, closed, then re-opened <strong>in</strong> 2008 to a new mandate. The<br />

authors analyze persistent attitud<strong>in</strong>al challenges the Center cont<strong>in</strong>ues<br />

to face, even as it has succeeded <strong>in</strong> its mission <strong>of</strong> reach<strong>in</strong>g students<br />

across discipl<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

The Metropolitan Campus was founded <strong>in</strong> 1962 as part <strong>of</strong> the InterAmerican<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Puerto Rico (IAUPR, founded <strong>in</strong> 1912), a private, coeducational<br />

nonpr<strong>of</strong>it teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stitution with a Christian heritage and an<br />

ecumenical tradition. IAUPR was accredited <strong>in</strong> 1944 by the Middle States<br />

Association <strong>of</strong> Colleges and Schools, thus becom<strong>in</strong>g the first four-year liberal<br />

arts college to be accredited outside the cont<strong>in</strong>ental limits <strong>of</strong> the United<br />

States. At present, our campus serves an average <strong>of</strong> 10,600 students, who are<br />

enrolled <strong>in</strong> one <strong>of</strong> four faculties: Sciences and Technology, Education and<br />

Behavioral Pr<strong>of</strong>essions, Bus<strong>in</strong>ess and Economic Adm<strong>in</strong>istration, and Humanistic<br />

Studies. It <strong>of</strong>fers all levels <strong>of</strong> study from certificates to doctoral degrees.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g the 1983-84 academic year, our university <strong>in</strong>itiated an <strong>in</strong>novative<br />

general education program that <strong>in</strong>cluded a composition course <strong>in</strong> Spanish,<br />

our first language. IAUPR was the first university <strong>in</strong> Puerto Rico to require a<br />

composition course <strong>in</strong> our native language. Specifically, this course allowed<br />
