dergraduates, postgraduates and researchers and with support<strong>in</strong>g staff <strong>in</strong> their<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> academic writ<strong>in</strong>g. The objectives <strong>of</strong> the Centre, as set out <strong>in</strong> the first<br />

phase <strong>of</strong> the SIF project (2007-2009), were as follows:<br />

• Improve writ<strong>in</strong>g skills <strong>of</strong> students <strong>in</strong> the collaborat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stitutions to assist<br />

them with current studies and future pr<strong>of</strong>essional lives.<br />

• Support course and curriculum design/development.<br />

• Foster meta-cognitive th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g about writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Bolster recruitment and retention efforts, by support<strong>in</strong>g students with<br />

particular needs, specifically mature students, first years, students <strong>in</strong> Access<br />

programmes.<br />

• Conduct ongo<strong>in</strong>g evaluation <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terventions.<br />

• Initiate a site for action research output related to writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Share exist<strong>in</strong>g expertise and experience to date among collaborat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions.<br />

Charged with the responsibility to design, deliver and evaluate writ<strong>in</strong>g-support<br />

<strong>in</strong>terventions and to assist with the development <strong>of</strong> an academic plan for<br />

the cont<strong>in</strong>ued development <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre, the two <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Consultants<br />

set about develop<strong>in</strong>g Ireland’s first Regional <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre.<br />

A first priority for the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre was to support student writers. With<br />

the goal <strong>of</strong> bolster<strong>in</strong>g student recruitment and retention, strong emphasis has<br />

been placed on facilitat<strong>in</strong>g first-year students’ acculturation <strong>in</strong>to the academic<br />

community, while also reach<strong>in</strong>g out to targeted groups <strong>of</strong> students with particular<br />

needs. This goal has been achieved through the follow<strong>in</strong>g media:<br />

• <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Interventions <strong>in</strong> Discipl<strong>in</strong>ary Modules: The two <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Consultants<br />

have worked closely with subject specialists to design such <strong>in</strong>terventions<br />

<strong>in</strong> a significant number <strong>of</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>es. Such <strong>in</strong>terventions are<br />

delivered by the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Consultants or tra<strong>in</strong>ed tutors or teach<strong>in</strong>g assistants<br />

from with<strong>in</strong> the discipl<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

• One-to-one Tutorial Assistance: The number <strong>of</strong> one-on-one sessions <strong>in</strong> the<br />

<strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre has been steadily <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>ce our <strong>in</strong>ception. In accordance<br />

with this, the number <strong>of</strong> tutors and the discipl<strong>in</strong>es they represent<br />

has also <strong>in</strong>creased. Undergraduate peer-tutors are recruited from the<br />

module Peer-tutor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, based on their performance<br />

<strong>in</strong> that module. Postgraduates are selected based on an <strong>in</strong>terview and<br />

an evaluation <strong>of</strong> their writ<strong>in</strong>g and, subsequently, tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> our <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

Centre tutor<strong>in</strong>g techniques.<br />

• Stand-alone Workshops: These generic writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itiatives <strong>in</strong>clude essaywrit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

workshops, academic-writ<strong>in</strong>g workshops and writ<strong>in</strong>g support for<br />

mature students, facilitated by the two <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Consultants and tra<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

tutors.<br />
