tion, Spanish, Music, and Psychology pr<strong>of</strong>essors. At this moment our Internet<br />

webpage is under construction to serve our onl<strong>in</strong>e students. We are also mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

plans to develop podcasts to strengthen our services.<br />

Reopen<strong>in</strong>g the Center constitutes a new effort to <strong>in</strong>corporate writ<strong>in</strong>g as a<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g tool <strong>in</strong> the curriculum, while we also take care <strong>of</strong> our students’ needs<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the writ<strong>in</strong>g process. The Center is also part <strong>of</strong> the restructur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the<br />

services <strong>of</strong>fered by the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Humanistic Studies and part <strong>of</strong> the new academic<br />

vision <strong>of</strong> our present adm<strong>in</strong>istration. It is important to mention that the<br />

Language Laboratories have been elim<strong>in</strong>ated, so our <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Center occupies<br />

the place it should have <strong>in</strong> an educational <strong>in</strong>stitution that aspires to graduate its<br />

students with writ<strong>in</strong>g competencies.<br />

WHERE WE ARE NOW<br />

We are very satisfied with our achievements up to now. Nevertheless, we are<br />

aware that budgetary decisions sometimes do not allow us to <strong>of</strong>fer the number<br />

<strong>of</strong> tutorials requested. There is still not a clear understand<strong>in</strong>g that the tutor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sessions have to be given <strong>in</strong>dividually <strong>in</strong> both Spanish and English dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

hours when the Center is opened. In addition, there is still no budget assigned<br />

for books and other educational materials.<br />

We are also concerned that many faculty members still view the teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g as be<strong>in</strong>g equivalent to teach<strong>in</strong>g grammar. Therefore, these faculty believe<br />

that only Spanish and English pr<strong>of</strong>essors should teach writ<strong>in</strong>g. All required<br />

Spanish courses have also been revised s<strong>in</strong>ce 2000; they are all literature courses<br />

now. The syllabi <strong>in</strong>dicate that writ<strong>in</strong>g and read<strong>in</strong>g processes are <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> all<br />

<strong>of</strong> them, but not all pr<strong>of</strong>essors teach these. A strong grammar component has<br />

gradually been <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> these courses <strong>in</strong> recent years, too.<br />

Faculty development is still part <strong>of</strong> the Center, because the present adm<strong>in</strong>istration<br />

has appo<strong>in</strong>ted us as members <strong>of</strong> a campus-wide Interdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

Committee. Therefore, we sense that the adm<strong>in</strong>istration is try<strong>in</strong>g to locate<br />

our CAC program <strong>in</strong> our <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Center. The mission <strong>of</strong> this committee is to<br />

tra<strong>in</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essors who are <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> their courses.<br />

It is <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g to note that our participation <strong>in</strong> this committee has helped<br />

us reaffirm the results <strong>of</strong> a study that we recently completed with two other<br />

colleagues from other higher education <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong> Puerto Rico (Qu<strong>in</strong>tana,<br />

García Arroyo, Arribas, & Hernández, <strong>in</strong> press). In Puerto Rico, the teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g is still viewed from a very timid standpo<strong>in</strong>t. All <strong>of</strong> the<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istrators <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>stitutions that we surveyed agreed that there is a great<br />

concern with CAC, and they also recognized that many <strong>of</strong> the students enrolled<br />
