<strong>in</strong> both English and Hebrew academic writ<strong>in</strong>g. It was decided at that meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to meet several times a year face-to-face and to communicate by email as<br />

well. S<strong>in</strong>ce then, our organization has grown—we now have over 150 members<br />

on our mail<strong>in</strong>g list. We have succeeded <strong>in</strong> establish<strong>in</strong>g a communication<br />

network and made connections among people <strong>in</strong> our field. We have had five<br />

face-to-face meet<strong>in</strong>gs dur<strong>in</strong>g each <strong>of</strong> the first two years <strong>of</strong> the organization—<strong>in</strong><br />

2010, we held only four as we had many more activities <strong>in</strong> preparation for our<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational conference <strong>in</strong> July. At our meet<strong>in</strong>gs, we have had workshops, visit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

lecturers, research presentations, practical applications, and discussions,<br />

address<strong>in</strong>g such issues as respond<strong>in</strong>g to and assess<strong>in</strong>g student writ<strong>in</strong>g, the use <strong>of</strong><br />

technology <strong>in</strong> the teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g, and how to ga<strong>in</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istrative support<br />

for our programs. Members from all over the country, from colleges and universities,<br />

and from Hebrew, English, and German departments have attended. We<br />

have found a home for our organization, MOFET, the Institute <strong>of</strong> Research,<br />

Curriculum and Program Development for Teacher Education, an already exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and respected <strong>in</strong>stitution.<br />

The first <strong>in</strong>ternational conference on academic writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Israel,<br />

“<strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> and Beyond <strong>in</strong> Multicultural Societies,” took place at the<br />

MOFET Institute <strong>in</strong> Tel-Aviv on July 28 and 29, 2010. Some 200 participants,<br />

from the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, Ch<strong>in</strong>a,<br />

Russia, Italy, Turkey, and Cyprus, as well as from Israel attended the conference.<br />

One hundred twenty presentations were given <strong>in</strong> Hebrew and English<br />

and <strong>in</strong>cluded panel discussions, workshops, and <strong>in</strong>dividual papers. Keynote<br />

speakers were John Harbord <strong>of</strong> the Central European University <strong>in</strong> Hungary,<br />

Chris Anson <strong>of</strong> North Carol<strong>in</strong>a State University, Otto Kruse <strong>of</strong> the Zurich<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Applied Sciences, and Deborah Holdste<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> Columbia College,<br />

Chicago. Topics covered <strong>in</strong>cluded the development <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g centers, writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> the discipl<strong>in</strong>es, writ<strong>in</strong>g across the curriculum, how to deal with plagiarism,<br />

bridg<strong>in</strong>g the gap between high school writ<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the university,<br />

the use <strong>of</strong> technology <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g academic writ<strong>in</strong>g, giv<strong>in</strong>g feedback, and the<br />

connection between creativity and academic writ<strong>in</strong>g. For this first conference<br />

<strong>in</strong> Israel, we wanted to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. The conference<br />

succeeded <strong>in</strong> connect<strong>in</strong>g us with like-m<strong>in</strong>ded educators throughout the<br />

world, and we hope that it widened the horizons <strong>of</strong> those <strong>of</strong> us engaged <strong>in</strong> the<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g and research <strong>of</strong> academic writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Israel.<br />

We hope that the conference will advance the goals <strong>of</strong> our organization. We<br />

have not yet succeeded <strong>in</strong> locat<strong>in</strong>g all the exist<strong>in</strong>g programs <strong>in</strong> academic writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> Israel. Nor have we arranged to publish a journal or set up a permanent<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternet site, both <strong>of</strong> which are <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> our long term goals. We would also<br />
