acknowledge not only their own current developmental state as writers<br />

but also to accept each other <strong>in</strong> their <strong>in</strong>dividuality. This Katr<strong>in</strong> sees as<br />

the foundation <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual confidence and trust among all members<br />

<strong>of</strong> the group.<br />

In 2002, Katr<strong>in</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ed a group <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g pedagogues <strong>in</strong> Germany <strong>in</strong>itiated<br />

by the Bielefeld University <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Lab, with the goal <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

pedagogical potential <strong>of</strong> peer tutor<strong>in</strong>g. In Bielefeld, Paula Gillespie and Harvey<br />

Kail presented a three-day workshop on peer tutor<strong>in</strong>g. Katr<strong>in</strong>’s experience <strong>of</strong><br />

this workshop was one that opened her eyes to the larger community <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pedagogues and the writ<strong>in</strong>g research related to peer learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> general (e.g.,<br />

Bruffee, 1984) and peer tutor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> specific. This experience, first<br />

<strong>of</strong> all, had a large impact on the further development <strong>of</strong> Katr<strong>in</strong>’s concept <strong>of</strong><br />

the autonomous academic writ<strong>in</strong>g group. It actually provided her with enough<br />

confidence to f<strong>in</strong>ally put it <strong>in</strong>to practice <strong>in</strong> 2003.<br />

At the same time she started to develop a concept for a peer-run writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

center at EUV, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program for student writ<strong>in</strong>g tutors. Katr<strong>in</strong><br />

wanted to provide a home base not only for the autonomous writ<strong>in</strong>g groups<br />

but also for other writ<strong>in</strong>g sem<strong>in</strong>ars and workshops to come and, last but not<br />

least, for <strong>in</strong>dividual peer-tutor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g. In the process <strong>of</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>g for the<br />

open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the center <strong>in</strong> 2007, Katr<strong>in</strong> spent several months visit<strong>in</strong>g US writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

centers. She also pr<strong>of</strong>ited greatly from German writ<strong>in</strong>g pedagogues who had<br />

started their own writ<strong>in</strong>g centers <strong>in</strong> Bielefeld, Bochum, and Freiburg. Katr<strong>in</strong><br />

also participated <strong>in</strong> the certificate program for writ<strong>in</strong>g coaches at the writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

center <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Education Freiburg. Several alumni <strong>of</strong> this program<br />

started an <strong>in</strong>formal network where people freely share their experience not only<br />

with coach<strong>in</strong>g writers but also with <strong>in</strong>itiat<strong>in</strong>g change with regard to writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>of</strong> higher education.<br />

After the open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the writ<strong>in</strong>g center at EUV <strong>in</strong> 2007, Katr<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiated<br />

several developmental projects with great impact on redef<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the role <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at EUV. The most important for her is a course Katr<strong>in</strong> developed on collaborative<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g as a mode <strong>of</strong> cultural learn<strong>in</strong>g. “Intercultural writ<strong>in</strong>g teams” is<br />

an <strong>in</strong>novative sem<strong>in</strong>ar model that is <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong>to the curriculum <strong>of</strong> the crossdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

master’s degree <strong>in</strong> European Studies and arranges cross-cultural encounters<br />

based on creative writ<strong>in</strong>g methods. Students work <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>terculturally<br />

mixed small groups that meet regularly once a week dur<strong>in</strong>g the semester. In<br />

addition, every two weeks all small groups jo<strong>in</strong> a sem<strong>in</strong>ar on academic writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

This mix <strong>of</strong> academic and creative-oriented teamwork aims at a more holistic<br />

academic socialization for both the <strong>in</strong>ternational as well as the German master’s<br />

students. Therefore, students aren’t just practic<strong>in</strong>g academic literacy skills, but<br />

also <strong>in</strong>tercultural competence and team skills.<br />
