SUCCESSES IN TEACHING WRITING AT QUT<br />

AusAid scholarships are highly-valued and aim to contribute to the longterm<br />

development needs <strong>of</strong> Australia’s partner countries by provid<strong>in</strong>g scholarship<br />

holders with leadership skills and knowledge to drive change and <strong>in</strong>fluence<br />

the development outcomes <strong>of</strong> their own country (Australian Government<br />

2009, p. 1). AusAid is a five week course and <strong>in</strong>cludes a one week “settl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>” component and a four week <strong>in</strong>tensive academic program. This program is<br />

designed by the ISS Language and Learn<strong>in</strong>g Unit and conducted each January<br />

and June prior to each new academic semester. The program enables students to<br />

develop and practice language and learn<strong>in</strong>g skills needed for success <strong>in</strong> their academic<br />

studies. The ma<strong>in</strong> academic focus is a project which l<strong>in</strong>ks directly to each<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual student’s <strong>in</strong>tended course <strong>of</strong> study and leads students through a series<br />

<strong>of</strong> tasks, which <strong>in</strong>clude: pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> effective academic writ<strong>in</strong>g; understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

criteria for assessment; start<strong>in</strong>g to research and f<strong>in</strong>d references; develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

listen<strong>in</strong>g and note-tak<strong>in</strong>g skills (with different guest lecturers from faculties <strong>in</strong><br />

which the students are enrolled); read<strong>in</strong>g and research strategies; article summary<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g; understand<strong>in</strong>g and explor<strong>in</strong>g their projects—develop<strong>in</strong>g useful<br />

research questions; identify<strong>in</strong>g the structure <strong>of</strong>, and deconstruct<strong>in</strong>g a typical essay;<br />

text analysis; literature review and us<strong>in</strong>g literature to support an argument,<br />

as well as us<strong>in</strong>g references effectively; report writ<strong>in</strong>g, academic language, and<br />

style; learn<strong>in</strong>g styles and strategies; oral presentation strategies; and advanced<br />

powerpo<strong>in</strong>t strategies.<br />

Students are required to present a summary <strong>of</strong> selected read<strong>in</strong>gs, a draft essay<br />

outl<strong>in</strong>e, and a f<strong>in</strong>al essay <strong>of</strong> 2,000 words, as well as an oral presentation <strong>of</strong><br />

10 m<strong>in</strong>utes with a five m<strong>in</strong>ute question session. The teach<strong>in</strong>g team members<br />

each present different sessions <strong>in</strong> the program, provid<strong>in</strong>g students a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g styles and accents.<br />

Students respond positively to the program and their comments have<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded:<br />

Great facilitation and support from the teachers <strong>in</strong> academic<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g sessions.<br />

These sessions actually made me improve my capacities and<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

A lovely program, makes me feel confident to take on the<br />

QUT challenge.<br />
