The writ<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>or gives students advanced <strong>in</strong>struction and opportunities<br />

for practical experience. Students learn diverse genres <strong>in</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>es and pr<strong>of</strong>essions;<br />

they learn to modify styles for varied audiences and formats. All courses<br />

for the m<strong>in</strong>or are “upper division,” although students also take the prerequisites<br />

for those courses. The curriculum <strong>in</strong>cludes four areas: writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> academic<br />

sett<strong>in</strong>gs; writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>essions; history, theory and design; and a writ<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>tensive<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternship outside the academy.<br />

<strong>Many</strong> students choose <strong>in</strong>ternships <strong>in</strong> journalism: as reporters and editors <strong>of</strong><br />

the student newspaper, The California Aggie, or for UC Magaz<strong>in</strong>e, local newspapers,<br />

radio and television stations, pr<strong>in</strong>t magaz<strong>in</strong>es, and onl<strong>in</strong>e publications.<br />

Internships <strong>in</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g and public relations are common, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g work for<br />

University Communications and other campus organizations, for local visitors’<br />

bureaus, for local bus<strong>in</strong>esses and w<strong>in</strong>eries.<br />

Some enterpris<strong>in</strong>g students have ga<strong>in</strong>ed writ<strong>in</strong>g experience <strong>in</strong> other pr<strong>of</strong>essions<br />

through their <strong>in</strong>ternships: research and writ<strong>in</strong>g for law firms or district<br />

attorneys’ <strong>of</strong>fices, technical writ<strong>in</strong>g and edit<strong>in</strong>g, writ<strong>in</strong>g for political <strong>of</strong>fices or<br />

campaigns, or grant-writ<strong>in</strong>g for the university, for specific scientific research<br />

projects, or for non-pr<strong>of</strong>it organizations.<br />

While many students <strong>in</strong> the m<strong>in</strong>or already have excellent writ<strong>in</strong>g skills, a<br />

significant number have chosen the m<strong>in</strong>or because English is their second language<br />

or because they consider their writ<strong>in</strong>g poor.<br />

I never considered myself a writer. I did the m<strong>in</strong>or because I<br />

knew writ<strong>in</strong>g was one <strong>of</strong> my weakest skills. Now I don’t feel<br />

like that. I know how to write various forms, such as press<br />

releases. I never thought I had a strong grammar background,<br />

but this is an area <strong>in</strong> which I’ve also seen improvement. I<br />

believe this is because I was put <strong>in</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> edit<strong>in</strong>g the writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> others. I feel able to write on the job when I leave UC<br />

Because <strong>of</strong> the range <strong>of</strong> upper division courses <strong>in</strong> the discipl<strong>in</strong>es and pr<strong>of</strong>essions,<br />

students use the writ<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>or to prepare for careers <strong>in</strong> journalism,<br />

public relations, market<strong>in</strong>g, technical writ<strong>in</strong>g, edit<strong>in</strong>g, grant writ<strong>in</strong>g, and public<br />

policy analysis. Certification <strong>of</strong> the m<strong>in</strong>or on students’ transcripts establishes<br />

their credentials for writ<strong>in</strong>g-<strong>in</strong>tensive jobs immediately after graduation, <strong>in</strong><br />

non-pr<strong>of</strong>it organizations, bus<strong>in</strong>esses, and other fields.<br />

The m<strong>in</strong>or is perfect toward prepar<strong>in</strong>g me for my dream<br />
