TEACHING ACADEMIC<br />

WRITING AT THE UNIVERSITY<br />

OF WOLLONGONG<br />

Initiatives for the development <strong>of</strong> literacy at the University <strong>of</strong> Wollongong<br />

are grow<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> an Australian national commitment to<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease overall tertiary enrollment, provide access to students from<br />

less-advantaged groups, and enroll more <strong>in</strong>ternational students. While<br />

this essay describes successful programs with<strong>in</strong> the <strong>Academic</strong> Services<br />

Division at Wollongong built to support student literacy, especially<br />

academic writ<strong>in</strong>g, it primarily emphasizes the work <strong>of</strong> a problemsolv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

task force on English language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency aimed at build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

consensus for a collaborative, cross-discipl<strong>in</strong>ary paradigm <strong>of</strong> literacy<br />

growth that moves away from the traditional idea <strong>of</strong> separable services.<br />

The essay pr<strong>of</strong>iles a new <strong>in</strong>itiative <strong>in</strong> the Master <strong>of</strong> Science program<br />

that exemplifies uses <strong>of</strong> technology to make literacy growth <strong>in</strong>tegral to<br />

every aspect <strong>of</strong> student learn<strong>in</strong>g and success, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the design <strong>of</strong><br />

ma<strong>in</strong>stream courses. This <strong>in</strong>itiative and others like it depend on the<br />

collaboration <strong>of</strong> language teachers and researchers with teachers <strong>in</strong> the<br />

target discipl<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

THE INSTITUTIONAL CONTEXT<br />

The University <strong>of</strong> Wollongong is a mid-sized Australian university, organised<br />

<strong>in</strong>to n<strong>in</strong>e faculties and various graduate schools and research <strong>in</strong>stitutes, with a<br />

population <strong>of</strong> approximately 23,000 students and 1,000 teach<strong>in</strong>g academics at<br />

its ma<strong>in</strong> campus, and grow<strong>in</strong>g numbers at its various satellite education centres<br />

and <strong>of</strong>fshore operations. In its relatively short history, the <strong>in</strong>stitution has made<br />

a good name for itself, and is very comfortably positioned <strong>in</strong> annual national<br />

“rat<strong>in</strong>gs” competitions that attract federal fund<strong>in</strong>g rewards for teach<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
