CHAPTER 1.<br />

ORIGINS, AIMS, AND USES<br />

OF WRITING PROGRAMS<br />

WORLDWIDE: PROFILES OF<br />

ACADEMIC WRITING IN MANY<br />

PLACES<br />

By Chris Thaiss<br />

University <strong>of</strong> California, Davis (US)<br />

To <strong>in</strong>troduce <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Programs</strong> <strong>Worldwide</strong>, this essay describes and<br />

analyzes major reasons for this project to be undertaken and its primary<br />

goals. It also presents f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs and analysis <strong>of</strong> the ongo<strong>in</strong>g (s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

2006) International WAC/WID Mapp<strong>in</strong>g Project, specifically <strong>of</strong> its<br />

“<strong>in</strong>ternational survey” <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g programs and <strong>in</strong>itiatives, which has<br />

received responses from more than 330 <strong>in</strong>stitutions on six cont<strong>in</strong>ents.<br />

The essay describes how the survey results led to the choice <strong>of</strong> the universities<br />

<strong>in</strong>vited to contribute pr<strong>of</strong>ile chapters to this collection, as well as<br />

to the topics and emphases <strong>in</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>iles themselves. The essay suggests<br />

reasons why teachers, program developers, adm<strong>in</strong>istrators, and scholars<br />

might benefit from explor<strong>in</strong>g the “many places” described and reflected<br />

on <strong>in</strong> the array <strong>of</strong> contributions to this ongo<strong>in</strong>g project.<br />

We <strong>in</strong>tend this book, <strong>in</strong> its pr<strong>in</strong>t and onl<strong>in</strong>e versions, to <strong>in</strong>form decisionmak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

by teachers, program managers, and college/university adm<strong>in</strong>istrators<br />

<strong>in</strong> regard to how writ<strong>in</strong>g is conceived <strong>of</strong>, managed, funded, and taught <strong>in</strong> higher<br />

education. We <strong>in</strong>tend it, also, to contribute to the grow<strong>in</strong>g research literature <strong>in</strong><br />

the shap<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g programs.<br />

In our title, “<strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Programs</strong> <strong>Worldwide</strong>,” and <strong>in</strong> our subtitle, “<strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>iles</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Many</strong> <strong>Places</strong>,” we have tried to jo<strong>in</strong> three aims <strong>of</strong> scholarship.<br />

The first <strong>of</strong> these, embodied <strong>in</strong> the term “worldwide,” is to further the<br />

effort to build a transnational community <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g scholars, teachers, and<br />

program adm<strong>in</strong>istrators who can share for their mutual benefit the discoveries<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals and small teams. This aim has been exemplified by the growth<br />
