Centre is situated <strong>in</strong> the Ma<strong>in</strong> Build<strong>in</strong>g, roughly equidistant from all other<br />

campus localities.<br />

As with most third-level <strong>in</strong>stitutes around the world, participation <strong>in</strong> a<br />

global economy and moves toward a mass education have changed the context<br />

<strong>in</strong>to which learn<strong>in</strong>g is facilitated (Ivanič and Lea, 2006). Increased attention<br />

has been given to the l<strong>in</strong>k between education and career opportunities. In its<br />

mission statement (University <strong>of</strong> Limerick, 2009, p. 1), the university stresses<br />

its relationship to Ireland’s national goal <strong>of</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>g its citizens to participate<br />

<strong>in</strong> a global, highly competitive knowledge economy. In an effort to upskill its<br />

workforce, Ireland’s third-level <strong>in</strong>stitutes strive to be more <strong>in</strong>clusive. As a result,<br />

student populations <strong>in</strong>clude an ever-<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g number from backgrounds that<br />

do not <strong>in</strong>clude the cultural and economic support systems that students from<br />

more traditional backgrounds might take for granted. In order to accommodate<br />

spatial and temporal varieties, such as distance learners, and encourage <strong>in</strong>stitutional<br />

collaborations, greater emphasis has been placed on teach<strong>in</strong>g with technology.<br />

Additionally, with state aid dim<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g, there is a greater reliance on<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational students for revenue, <strong>in</strong>fus<strong>in</strong>g the facilitation <strong>of</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g and, <strong>in</strong><br />

particular, mean<strong>in</strong>g-mak<strong>in</strong>g tasks with further language and cultural challenges.<br />

Fund<strong>in</strong>g challenges also <strong>in</strong>spire a greater <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the l<strong>in</strong>k between scholarly<br />

research and entrepreneurial development. F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>in</strong> an effort to <strong>in</strong>crease enrolment<br />

and to improve retention rates, attention has shifted to the student<br />

experience. Educators are subject to a mount<strong>in</strong>g pressure to evidence the quality<br />

<strong>of</strong> their performance. Aga<strong>in</strong>st this backdrop, the Regional <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre<br />

has taken shape and has thus far survived and, <strong>in</strong> some respects, even thrived.<br />

FROM INCEPTION TO FRUITION<br />

Prior to the establishment <strong>of</strong> the Regional <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre, there had been<br />

a grow<strong>in</strong>g concern among faculty at UL about the writ<strong>in</strong>g competencies <strong>of</strong><br />

their students. Initial responses to anecdotal concerns <strong>in</strong>cluded ad hoc writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cl<strong>in</strong>ics and sem<strong>in</strong>ars. Much <strong>of</strong> that response came via UL’s Language Support<br />

Unit. Strong support for a university-wide <strong>in</strong>itiative on writ<strong>in</strong>g was evidenced<br />

by the <strong>in</strong>tensity <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terest. An <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary work<strong>in</strong>g group was formed<br />

to <strong>in</strong>vestigate the means that this support might take. The discipl<strong>in</strong>ary diversity<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terest was reflected <strong>in</strong> the make-up <strong>of</strong> that <strong>in</strong>itial work<strong>in</strong>g group, which<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded representatives from each <strong>of</strong> the four Faculties; namely Arts, Humanities<br />

and Social Sciences; Education and Health Sciences; the Kemmy Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

School; and Science and Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. The efforts <strong>of</strong> those <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itiative culm<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>in</strong>:<br />
