SUSTAINABILITY OF THE REGIONAL WRITING CENTRE<br />

Another responsibility <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Consultants, <strong>in</strong> addition to develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

student writ<strong>in</strong>g, was to assist with the development <strong>of</strong> an academic<br />

plan for the cont<strong>in</strong>ued development <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre. The most important<br />

aspect <strong>of</strong> this plan was the susta<strong>in</strong>ability <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre <strong>in</strong><br />

the post-SIF (Strategic Initiative Fund) period. Throughout the SIF-funded<br />

period, the aim <strong>of</strong> the Centre was to ensure the development <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiatives<br />

that would be valued so greatly that the <strong>in</strong>stitutions would not want to do<br />

without them. However, as the SIF project neared an end <strong>in</strong> June 2009,<br />

the possibility <strong>of</strong> further SIF fund<strong>in</strong>g to susta<strong>in</strong> the Shannon Consortium<br />

Regional <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre dim<strong>in</strong>ished as the economic climate weakened.<br />

The focus for future fund<strong>in</strong>g turned toward the <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>in</strong>stitutions for<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>ability. UL contributed match<strong>in</strong>g SIF fund<strong>in</strong>g to susta<strong>in</strong> the Regional<br />

<strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre at the university for a further year, until June 2010.<br />

The efforts <strong>of</strong> the Centre staff <strong>in</strong> that year were to ensure that the fund<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre would come from core budget. Embedd<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

Centre activity <strong>in</strong> core curricula, it was advised, was the means to ensur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>ability. In addition to cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>itiatives outl<strong>in</strong>ed above, the<br />

Centre was <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the design and development <strong>of</strong> further modules to<br />

ensure its presence <strong>in</strong> the core activities <strong>of</strong> the university; for <strong>in</strong>stance, the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> modules entitled Thesis <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, Advanced Technical Communication<br />

for Eng<strong>in</strong>eers, and Educational Guidance have been developed<br />

<strong>in</strong> conjunction with the MA programme <strong>in</strong> English Language Teach<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

the MEng <strong>in</strong> Mechanical Aeronautical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and the pre-university<br />

Access programme respectively. It was hoped that these modules, alongside<br />

ever-<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tervention with<strong>in</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>ary modules, would be enough<br />

to ensure our susta<strong>in</strong>ability <strong>in</strong> the university.<br />

Efforts to ensure the susta<strong>in</strong>ability <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre have resulted <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Centre grow<strong>in</strong>g quite rapidly and <strong>in</strong> many diverse directions. Such diversity ensured<br />

the visibility <strong>of</strong> the Centre <strong>in</strong> its <strong>in</strong>fancy and built goodwill amongst faculty<br />

and staff. However, with limited resources, such diversity and rapid growth<br />

would be difficult to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>. Follow<strong>in</strong>g the external evaluation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

Centre <strong>in</strong> July 2008, 1 carried out by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor. Terry Myers Zawacki, former<br />

<strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Center Director and currently Director <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Across the Curriculum<br />

(WAC) Program at George Mason University, it was recommended<br />

that the scope <strong>of</strong> activities and <strong>in</strong>itiatives the Centre had developed <strong>in</strong> the SIFfunded<br />

period be narrowed <strong>in</strong> order to ensure the susta<strong>in</strong>ability <strong>of</strong> the Centre<br />

and to grow the Centre <strong>in</strong> the two areas central to its core mission, namely to<br />

assist students with their writ<strong>in</strong>g, through one-on-one and group support, as a<br />
