and motives—how they address their specific student and staff populations,<br />

concerns, and political realities, even as they share some common practices.<br />

THE PLACE AND PROJECTION OF WRITING PROGRAMS<br />

WORLDWIDE IN THE ONGOING RESEARCH<br />

The publication <strong>of</strong> <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Programs</strong> <strong>Worldwide</strong> <strong>in</strong> both pr<strong>in</strong>t (Parlor Press)<br />

and digital formats (as part <strong>of</strong> the WAC Clear<strong>in</strong>ghouse at http://wac/colostate.<br />

edu) signifies our <strong>in</strong>tent to cont<strong>in</strong>ue to build pr<strong>of</strong>iles <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiatives <strong>in</strong> the teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g after publication. For many years, the Clear<strong>in</strong>ghouse, under the<br />

imag<strong>in</strong>ative leadership <strong>of</strong> Mike Palmquist, has served the WAC/WID movement<br />

<strong>in</strong> the US as a dest<strong>in</strong>ation site for descriptions <strong>of</strong> college and university<br />

WAC/WID programs. De facto, the Clear<strong>in</strong>ghouse is an <strong>in</strong>ternational site, as<br />

its ever-<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g body <strong>of</strong> materials is accessed by users from many countries.<br />

We see <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Programs</strong> <strong>Worldwide</strong> significantly augment<strong>in</strong>g the transnational<br />

content <strong>of</strong> the Clear<strong>in</strong>ghouse—and provid<strong>in</strong>g a template for pr<strong>of</strong>iles <strong>of</strong> more<br />

and more <strong>in</strong>stitutions. Moreover, the onl<strong>in</strong>e version <strong>of</strong> <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Programs</strong> <strong>Worldwide</strong><br />

will give us the flexibility to publish pr<strong>of</strong>iles <strong>in</strong> diverse languages, just as<br />

the WAC/WID Mapp<strong>in</strong>g Project has encouraged responses <strong>in</strong> several languages.<br />

In these ways, both this research project and the Clear<strong>in</strong>ghouse will help to<br />

expand the <strong>in</strong>ternational community <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g scholars, teachers, and program<br />

designers.<br />

A NOTE ON VARIANTS IN SPELLING AND USAGE<br />

The editors have reta<strong>in</strong>ed as <strong>of</strong>ten as possible variants <strong>in</strong> spell<strong>in</strong>g, as well<br />

as elements <strong>of</strong> syntax and usage, that reflect the different versions <strong>of</strong> English<br />

(“Englishes”) most <strong>of</strong>ten used by our authors (or their translators) <strong>in</strong> their academic<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> that language. In most cases, readers will f<strong>in</strong>d a particular<br />

variant (e.g., “centre” or “center”) used consistently with<strong>in</strong> an essay. In a few<br />

<strong>in</strong>stances, uses <strong>of</strong> more than one variant <strong>in</strong> an essay reflect the author’s “code<br />

mesh<strong>in</strong>g” (Canagarajah, 2006) from different cultural contexts <strong>in</strong> the essay.<br />
