• Constant review <strong>of</strong> methodological strategies used <strong>in</strong> the classroom. This<br />

review has <strong>in</strong>cluded spaces <strong>in</strong> which the Department pr<strong>of</strong>essors share<br />

materials and experiences they have <strong>in</strong> class.<br />

• Expand<strong>in</strong>g personalized work spaces, so that not only first-year students<br />

have access to personal assistance sessions, but also more advanced students<br />

and pr<strong>of</strong>essors. The goal is to cont<strong>in</strong>ue evolv<strong>in</strong>g the space <strong>in</strong>to a<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g center.<br />

• Two courses held for teachers: <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> for Publish<strong>in</strong>g and Project-based<br />

Class Work, to br<strong>in</strong>g them closer to read<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g processes.<br />

• Publication and shar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> research work on the topic, made by a group<br />

<strong>of</strong> the PLEA teachers, under the leadership <strong>of</strong> the PLEA director.<br />

• Support <strong>of</strong> pedagogical campaigns aga<strong>in</strong>st plagiarism, and strategies to<br />

re<strong>in</strong>force read<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g skills for State exams.<br />

• Personalized assistance tutor<strong>in</strong>g to students to review their capstone<br />

projects for graduation, when they request it.<br />

• Creation <strong>of</strong> virtual classrooms with 33 supportive workshops that are<br />

designed to support the <strong>in</strong>dividual tutor<strong>in</strong>g work with onl<strong>in</strong>e assistance.<br />

• Forums held with high schools as an <strong>in</strong>stitutional outreach project with<br />

the goal <strong>of</strong> mov<strong>in</strong>g forward the dialogue between secondary schools and<br />

universities.<br />

• Development <strong>of</strong> extension courses to tra<strong>in</strong> high school teachers and other<br />

universities <strong>in</strong> orient<strong>in</strong>g read<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g processes.<br />

• Creation <strong>of</strong> two elective courses that are academic spaces built to support<br />

the writ<strong>in</strong>g processes <strong>of</strong> students work<strong>in</strong>g on their capstone projects, as<br />

well as the research processes <strong>of</strong> research groups, us<strong>in</strong>g “research nurseries”<br />

(more than 50). These spaces reflect advanced students’ need and<br />

desire for a work space.<br />

FORMATION OF THE REDLEES NETWORK<br />

As a strategy to <strong>in</strong>itiate a broader discussion on the national level, <strong>in</strong> 2007,<br />

an <strong>in</strong>vitation was sent to sixteen <strong>in</strong>stitutions, and with the support <strong>of</strong> the Colombia<br />

Association <strong>of</strong> Universities (ASCUN), the First National Conference<br />

on <strong>in</strong>stitutional policies to develop read<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> higher education<br />

was held <strong>in</strong> the Universidad Sergio Arboleda. The universities that participated<br />

<strong>in</strong> the meet<strong>in</strong>g formed the Read<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> Higher Education Network<br />

(REDLEES, from its name <strong>in</strong> Spanish), with the objective <strong>of</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutional policies for the development <strong>of</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> higher<br />

education. PLEA’s participation <strong>in</strong> the academic network has contributed to<br />
