ANALYSIS OF RESPONSES TO EACH QUESTION:<br />

Analyz<strong>in</strong>g the responses by question allows the generalizations that follow.<br />

1. Where are students writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> your <strong>in</strong>stitution, either <strong>in</strong> a first language <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>struction or <strong>in</strong> English? In what genres and circumstances?<br />

Seventy percent (70%) <strong>of</strong> the responses, from across countries, <strong>in</strong>dicate that<br />

much writ<strong>in</strong>g is be<strong>in</strong>g required <strong>of</strong> undergraduate (tertiary) and graduate (postgraduate)<br />

students <strong>in</strong> all or most discipl<strong>in</strong>es. This proportion may actually be<br />

higher, because <strong>in</strong> the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 30% <strong>of</strong> responses half (15%) either (1) focus<br />

their remarks on only one or two discipl<strong>in</strong>es with which the respondents are associated<br />

(approx. 10%), or (2) do not address this question (5%). Only 10% <strong>of</strong> the<br />

total explicitly say that little or no writ<strong>in</strong>g is required <strong>of</strong> undergraduate (tertiary)<br />

students across their fields, or that writ<strong>in</strong>g is required only <strong>in</strong> language courses.<br />

The length <strong>of</strong> the response largely determ<strong>in</strong>es the range and specificity <strong>of</strong> assignments<br />

named. A longer response, such as the follow<strong>in</strong>g, might name several<br />

genres, differentiated by area <strong>of</strong> the curriculum:<br />

Technical and bus<strong>in</strong>ess writ<strong>in</strong>g predom<strong>in</strong>ate. Science and<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g students . . . are writ<strong>in</strong>g reports, experimental<br />

plans, and the rare essay. Bus<strong>in</strong>ess students are also writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

reports. <strong>Academic</strong> essays are used <strong>in</strong> the social sciences and<br />

the humanities. In 2009, an academic writ<strong>in</strong>g course (a.k.a.<br />

FYC) will be required <strong>of</strong> all bachelor <strong>of</strong> arts students for the<br />

first time. Creative writ<strong>in</strong>g is taught as an elective to English<br />

majors and as a requirement <strong>of</strong> students <strong>in</strong> the bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />

communications (a jo<strong>in</strong>t humanities and bus<strong>in</strong>ess degree).<br />

Oral communication is taught <strong>in</strong> many <strong>of</strong> the same courses<br />

as writ<strong>in</strong>g. There are, <strong>of</strong> course, variations on this quick gloss,<br />

but this is the most obvious pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong> student writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Typical brief responses are the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

(Response 1) All departments, all eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g discipl<strong>in</strong>es, <strong>in</strong><br />

groups and <strong>in</strong>dividually, BSc-MSc-PhD level (i.e., writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
