<strong>in</strong> their <strong>in</strong>stitutions need to improve these competencies. However, the participants<br />

<strong>in</strong> our study still view the writ<strong>in</strong>g process as be<strong>in</strong>g the same as learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

grammar. In addition, the majority <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>stitutions that were surveyed still<br />

have Language Laboratories, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the other campuses <strong>of</strong> our <strong>in</strong>stitution.<br />

All emphasize remedial work, mostly grammar and punctuation exercises for<br />

which “correct” answers are sought to make sure, it is imag<strong>in</strong>ed, that students<br />

will obta<strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g competence.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> the members <strong>of</strong> our campus Interdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Committee<br />

also share this vision. They believe it is our responsibility, as Spanish and English<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essors, to make sure our students learn to write. In addition, they do<br />

not understand their role <strong>in</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g students ga<strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>of</strong>iciency <strong>in</strong> their<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>e. They all agree that students need to improve their writ<strong>in</strong>g skills, but<br />

they do not do anyth<strong>in</strong>g about it. As a matter <strong>of</strong> fact, they have <strong>in</strong>dicated that<br />

they do not <strong>in</strong>clude any writ<strong>in</strong>g activities <strong>in</strong> their courses because students do<br />

not know how to write. Therefore, our ma<strong>in</strong> challenge <strong>in</strong> this committee is to<br />

conv<strong>in</strong>ce these members that writ<strong>in</strong>g is a learn<strong>in</strong>g tool <strong>in</strong> all discipl<strong>in</strong>es. They<br />

also need to understand that the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Center can play a very active role <strong>in</strong><br />

the development <strong>of</strong> the writ<strong>in</strong>g competencies <strong>of</strong> our student body.<br />

Over the years we have f<strong>in</strong>ally understood that pr<strong>of</strong>essors who write and<br />

publish their work are the ones who understand the importance <strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong><br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> their discipl<strong>in</strong>es. It is these pr<strong>of</strong>essors who also understand the mission<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Center; this is why they sponsor it.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, it is important to po<strong>in</strong>t out that we have never doubted the value<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Center. In the Center our students write and discover their<br />

strengths. There writ<strong>in</strong>g is promoted as an art and as a tool to obta<strong>in</strong> success<br />

<strong>in</strong> any field or pr<strong>of</strong>ession. The Center gives them a wonderful opportunity to<br />

develop their <strong>in</strong>telligences, talents, and writ<strong>in</strong>g processes, most likely not developed<br />

<strong>in</strong> many traditional learn<strong>in</strong>g sett<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
