and that all departments were accountable for student success. Though the CPE<br />

was discont<strong>in</strong>ued by the university’s Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees <strong>in</strong> November 2010, the<br />

notion <strong>of</strong> broad faculty responsibility for student writ<strong>in</strong>g frames much <strong>of</strong> our<br />

work. The implications <strong>of</strong> the removal <strong>of</strong> this exam are yet to be determ<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

At Hostos, fund<strong>in</strong>g for WAC activities derives from the college’s allocation<br />

<strong>of</strong> the university’s budget for Coord<strong>in</strong>ated Undergraduate Education (CUE).<br />

Though fund<strong>in</strong>g for WAC is mandated <strong>in</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple by CUE, each college may<br />

now determ<strong>in</strong>e the actual amounts given to WAC programs. In the face <strong>of</strong><br />

city and state budget crises, the college’s CUE allocation cont<strong>in</strong>ues to dim<strong>in</strong>ish—<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

fund<strong>in</strong>g for WAC. Class size for WI sections, orig<strong>in</strong>ally capped<br />

at 25, grows each semester with 27-28 students the current norm. The college<br />

provides fund<strong>in</strong>g for stipends for faculty engaged <strong>in</strong> WAC work (which have<br />

decreased from an average <strong>of</strong> $1,500-2,000 for a year’s work to $500-1,000),<br />

for pr<strong>of</strong>essional development and reassigned time for the two WAC Coord<strong>in</strong>ators.<br />

The two-course WI requirement for graduation rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> effect, with<br />

waivers requir<strong>in</strong>g approval by the WAC Coord<strong>in</strong>ators. Adm<strong>in</strong>istrative support<br />

is also reflected <strong>in</strong> support for campus-wide WAC activities such as Hostos <strong>in</strong>volvement<br />

<strong>in</strong> National Council <strong>of</strong> Teachers <strong>of</strong> English (NCTE) National Day<br />

on <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> 2009 and 2010, events which drew huge campus participation.<br />

AGENT FOR CHANGE<br />

After a decade, the WAC Initiative has become <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong>to<br />

the life <strong>of</strong> the college, foster<strong>in</strong>g campus-wide dialogues on writ<strong>in</strong>g/read<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g and becom<strong>in</strong>g an agent for change as it encourages teachers to reflect<br />

upon their teach<strong>in</strong>g practices and reshape pedagogies. The success and growth<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Initiative may be traced to its ever expand<strong>in</strong>g role <strong>in</strong> strengthen<strong>in</strong>g undergraduate<br />

education by work<strong>in</strong>g closely with other college programs.<br />

The English Department and the Department <strong>of</strong> Language and Cognition<br />

hold frequent course-level meet<strong>in</strong>gs to discuss student literacies and work closely<br />

with the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Center (WC). <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Fellows <strong>of</strong>ten attend these meet<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

to provide an <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary perspective. Through WAC collaboration, plans<br />

are underway to provide greater <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong> the WC with courses throughout<br />

the curriculum, and Fellows are provid<strong>in</strong>g workshops for WC tutors <strong>in</strong><br />

elements <strong>of</strong> WID. Overall, the WAC Initiative encourages frequent dialogue<br />

among faculty to explore ways <strong>of</strong> foster<strong>in</strong>g student growth as writers and readers<br />

by: (1) <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g regularly scheduled pr<strong>of</strong>essional development workshops<br />
