program while the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 55% enter <strong>in</strong>to one <strong>of</strong> three entry-level required<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g courses. Students enter<strong>in</strong>g the university come from private <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

schools (American, French, German, British, Dutch) or enter directly<br />

from national schools.<br />

The Department is responsible for three required writ<strong>in</strong>g courses and a<br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> M<strong>in</strong>or. It employs 44-48 full time faculty who teach three<br />

courses per term. Ten percent <strong>of</strong> the current faculty hold PhDs <strong>in</strong> Rhetoric &<br />

Composition or related areas. The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g faculty have degrees <strong>in</strong> creative<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g, literature, history, theology, film studies, journalism, science, bus<strong>in</strong>ess,<br />

and TEFL (Teach<strong>in</strong>g English as a Foreign Language). The required lower-division<br />

curriculum consists <strong>of</strong> three required writ<strong>in</strong>g courses, which use (US)<br />

WPA (<strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Program Adm<strong>in</strong>istrators) Outcomes for First Year Composition<br />

as guidel<strong>in</strong>es (http://www.wpacouncil.org/positions/outcomes.html) and<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude a heavy emphasis on rhetorical strategies—voice, analysis, audience and<br />

argument—to assist <strong>in</strong> critical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g. The first course focuses on voice and<br />

analysis, the second on argument and audience, and the third on formal academic<br />

research. The Department’s <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Center <strong>of</strong>fers tutorials to 3,500 undergraduate<br />

students annually and 110 graduate students; the Center sponsors<br />

20 general and 10 discipl<strong>in</strong>e-specific workshops per semester for undergraduates<br />

and six general workshops and occasional customized courses for graduate<br />

students. The Department also sponsors an Undergraduate Research Conference,<br />

co-sponsors a l<strong>in</strong>guistics conference every other year, and <strong>of</strong>fers several<br />

Community Based Learn<strong>in</strong>g (CBL) courses.<br />

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT<br />

As Egypt’s national school curriculum rests on rote learn<strong>in</strong>g, many Egyptian<br />

students have difficulty with <strong>in</strong>dependent th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g. In general, students lack<br />

an awareness <strong>of</strong> the value <strong>of</strong> a liberal arts education, have little experience <strong>in</strong><br />

read<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g, have not been exposed to effective reason<strong>in</strong>g, and are unfamiliar<br />

with the concept <strong>of</strong> plagiarism. Although Egypt’s International Schools<br />

provide an American/European education for those who can afford it, many <strong>of</strong><br />

the faculty <strong>in</strong> these schools were not tra<strong>in</strong>ed to specifically address the writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

needs <strong>of</strong> students.<br />

The history <strong>of</strong> AUC’s effort to address these needs began <strong>in</strong> 1957, when<br />

AUC faculty voted for a six-credit freshman sem<strong>in</strong>ar consist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a two-course<br />

sequence—101 (Freshman Composition) and 102 (Research <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong>). At that<br />

time, the writ<strong>in</strong>g faculty was composed <strong>of</strong> three local hires with BAs <strong>in</strong> the<br />

humanities or social sciences. In the 1960s, the university added a second level<br />
