FOUNDATIONS DEVELOPMENT YEAR PROGRAM (FDYP)<br />

The goal <strong>of</strong> the FDYP is to support the English language development <strong>of</strong><br />

FDY students to ensure a smooth transition between the academic English expectations<br />

<strong>of</strong> the FDY and undergraduate programs. Although this program<br />

promotes the growth <strong>of</strong> all <strong>in</strong>terrelated English language skills, it focuses most<br />

strongly on advanc<strong>in</strong>g students’ academic writ<strong>in</strong>g abilities.<br />

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM (UP)<br />

Similar to the relationships built by many established writ<strong>in</strong>g centers (see,<br />

e.g., Pemberton, 1995;Thaiss & Porter, 2010; and the Gustafsson/Boström , ,<br />

McConlogue/Mitchell/Peake, and McMillan essays <strong>in</strong> this volume), the SU-<br />

WC’s Undergraduate Program (UP) aims to strengthen students’ writ<strong>in</strong>g skills<br />

through <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> the Discipl<strong>in</strong>es (WID) and <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> across the Curriculum<br />

(WAC), support<strong>in</strong>g their development as confident and effective communicators,<br />

researchers, and presenters, but primarily analytical and critical readers,<br />

th<strong>in</strong>kers, and writers with a voice. In workshops and tutorials, different strategies<br />

are practiced to help participants shape and ref<strong>in</strong>e their writ<strong>in</strong>g to achieve<br />

and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> academic standards concern<strong>in</strong>g content, organization, and format<br />

<strong>of</strong> their written work. Activities are designed <strong>in</strong> consideration <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

nature <strong>of</strong> the curriculum.<br />

For example, English 101 and 102 are composed <strong>of</strong> workshops and tutorials<br />

concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• writ<strong>in</strong>g processes<br />

• rhetorical styles<br />

• documentation techniques<br />

• research papers<br />

• film analysis<br />

• book reviews<br />

• presentation skills<br />

• effective <strong>in</strong>terviews<br />

• the Speakers’ Corner<br />

— all <strong>of</strong> these topics applicable <strong>in</strong> any discipl<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

WAC IMPLEMENTATION<br />

With<strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary context <strong>of</strong> curricula at SU, students are required<br />

to write competently <strong>in</strong> all the courses. They are expected to write response/<br />
