THE REGIONAL WRITING<br />

CENTRE AT THE UNIVERSITY<br />

OF LIMERICK<br />

In April 2007, Ireland’s first Regional <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre at the University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Limerick was launched. This chapter outl<strong>in</strong>es the various <strong>in</strong>ternational,<br />

European, national, regional, and <strong>in</strong>stitutional w<strong>in</strong>ds to which<br />

the grow<strong>in</strong>g Centre responded. Trail<strong>in</strong>g UL’s Regional <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre<br />

through its path from <strong>in</strong>ception to fruition, the pr<strong>of</strong>ile reveals the <strong>in</strong>fluences<br />

that have shaped its ethos, guided its development and served<br />

to susta<strong>in</strong> it. Furthermore, the pr<strong>of</strong>ile outl<strong>in</strong>es the Centre’s variegated<br />

approach for achiev<strong>in</strong>g what it hopes to be a more systematic approach<br />

to undergraduate, postgraduate, and pr<strong>of</strong>essional writ<strong>in</strong>g development<br />

at UL and the region.<br />

The University <strong>of</strong> Limerick (UL) is one <strong>of</strong> Ireland’s youngest universities.<br />

Established as the National Institute for Higher Education (NIHE) <strong>in</strong> 1972,<br />

the <strong>in</strong>stitute atta<strong>in</strong>ed its current university status <strong>in</strong> 1989. Describ<strong>in</strong>g itself as<br />

“an <strong>in</strong>dependent, <strong>in</strong>ternationally-focused university”(University <strong>of</strong> Limerick,<br />

2009, p. 1), UL is <strong>of</strong>ten referred to as more <strong>of</strong> an “American-style” university.<br />

Proud <strong>of</strong> its record <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong> education and excellence <strong>in</strong> research<br />

and scholarship, the university’s mission is “to promote and advance learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and knowledge through teach<strong>in</strong>g, research, and scholarship <strong>in</strong> an environment<br />

which encourages <strong>in</strong>novation and upholds the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> free enquiry and<br />

expression” (University <strong>of</strong> Limerick, 2009, p. 1). In 2011, 1,300 staff strive to<br />

qualify UL as an exceptional, vibrant learn<strong>in</strong>g environment for 11,300 students.<br />

Astride two sides <strong>of</strong> the River Shannon, the UL campus ranges over 130<br />

hectares <strong>in</strong> Counties Limerick and Clare. Its recreational, cultural and sport<strong>in</strong>g<br />

facilities are renowned, enhanc<strong>in</strong>g the university experience for students,<br />

staff and the wider, surround<strong>in</strong>g community. Further augment<strong>in</strong>g the university<br />

experience, the Regional <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Centre at UL, formed <strong>in</strong> April <strong>of</strong> 2007,<br />

is a relatively new addition to campus life. Central <strong>in</strong> all aspects, the <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
