Spanish architect Francisco Garcia Moro faced a challenge while designing and building St. Xavier’s Oratory about figuring out how to create a religious building that locals could relate to and understand through architecture that resonates with people’s perceptions and ways of life. The architect chose to decode the beauty of Thai vernacular architecture with a design concept that drew influence from local homes and craftsmanship elements inherited and created by local builders. Situated on waterside land in the middle of forestland, the oratory was designed to exist in harmony and humility with nature while still possessing the characteristics of a community center. Nature plays an important part in the spatial experience of the building and is incorporated as the highlight of the spatial program.
