TIME PASSAGES 87 10 บรรยากาศมุมมองพื้นที่ พักผ่อนย่อนใจซึ่งมี อาคารพื้นที่ส่วนบริการ อยู่เบื้องหลัง It is obvious that using old materials such as wooden panels and tiles comes with restrictions, especially when the reassembly attempts to retain the materials’ authenticity. The process was made even more difficult with this project because the contractors in charge of dismantlement and reconstruction were on different teams, and the designer was unable to thoroughly oversee the entirety of the project. Nonetheless, within imperfections are some intriguingly fitting components, and reassembling old components resulted in many new possibilities and impressive solutions. There are certain noticeable elements that were born from the modifications made to some of the building’s structural elements, such as how the columns were embedded less deeply into the ground or the arrangement of the wooden columns to correspond with the alternating attributes of the foundation, which resulted in the building being rather tall in height. This eventually leads to some additional changes to the overall architectural structure. One of them is the canopy, which was initially constructed to support the roof structure but ended up creating additional functional space. It’s interesting to see how the newly built components allow the space within the barns to be used more efficiently than just for storage. There are certain commonalities found in the design’s elevated floor that grant access to the exhibition space showcasing art and design creations, including the additional recreational functions and the space underneath the elevated floor of traditional Thai stilt homes. The space is used not just to keep miscellaneous objects but also for people to rest, relax, converse, and engage in different kinds of activities. From this perspective, each of the wooden panels salvaged and reconstructed from old rice barns and reinforced with new structural members may have been given new meanings.
