Builders can develop a broader and deeper understanding of the language and jargon used
in the architectural construction process through Sher Maker’s work process. Builders who
were previously expected to perform only basic brick and concrete work can now learn about
all of the varied methods and techniques. Nonetheless, undertaking a project outside of the
contracting system may result in mistakes in details, but this is quite normal for work processes
where everything is done by hand. The studio, on the other hand, seeks to oversee and supervise,
including mitigating problems as soon as possible and ensuring that the building team delivers
the work with the highest level of efficiency, thus avoiding any adverse impact on the design.
“We would discuss with project owners from the start whether they would be able to accept the
pros and cons (the mistakes that come with the handmade method).” Moonler, a showroom with
crafty features, is one such instance where there were no construction-related errors. You can
talk about craft, but the presentation or language can be delivered in various ways.
Sher Maker has adopted and developed their own ideation process in a manner similar to that
of local builders or artisans, which is adaptability based on locally derived or evolved modus
operandi that may be unique to a location or region. This goes hand in hand with their passion
for locality, particularly the facets of vernacular architectural languages and the work processes
behind them. Sher Maker views design through the vernacular characteristics of the area in
which a work is located before developing a work based on a true understanding of the root
and foundation represented through diverse architectural possibilities alongside the varying
skills and methods of local builders and artisans.
“Behind the conceptualization that shapes an architectural form are the rationale
and consequences distinctively determined by the work’s context. We also spend
time researching the materials we will use and developing a local tectonic building
system. Another aspect that we pay special attention to is the skill of local makers.
We would look for and incorporate the skills and know-how of local builders into
our work. These two components have always been our primary priorities and
interests, no matter where we work. The keywords of Sher Maker are local tectonics
and local human skill.”
“The emphasis on these two elements is visible in several of the studio’s projects, which, despite
being carried out using the same elemental thought process, are diverse and have their own
individual characteristics that are also indicative of the areas from which they are conceived.”
Such an end product may result from the studio’s attempt to understand the language uttered
through materials, craftmanship skills originating from a specific locality, and how stories are told
based on such roots using processes and methods that bring distinctive traits to an architectural
creation while retaining its connection to the context and place of which it is a part.
If we had to pick a project to illustrate the aforementioned process, it would be the refurbishment
of the PTT gas station in Saraphi district, Chiang Mai, which the two founders completed shortly
after starting the studio. The simple idea behind the magnificently remodeled façade composed
of lustrous ceramic tiles is that it reintroduces the petrol station with a fresh, distinct identity.
Meanwhile, the spectacular façade reflects the site’s surroundings, much like how reflective
mirrors face one another and produce infinite reflections. The underlying significance of the
wonderfully polished surface, which includes the earth used in the manufacturing of each tile,
comprises the work process, which encompasses thorough research, site inspection, and
experimenting with a local ceramic tile factory in the Saraphi area. The project met the brief, which
was to convey the unique characteristics of Chiang Mai. Patcharada went on to say that, in her
opinion, Chiang Mai should be represented by the craftsmanship skills of its people rather than
an attempt to tell a Chiang Mai story through spectacular but superficial architectural design.
