The site’s surroundings led the architect to develop
the layout in which the building’s axis is deviated
for the columns to perfectly embrace the entire
structure. The columns are set 45 degrees off the
axis of the floor plan, creating an open, spacious
space that is ideal for religious ceremonies. The
building’s spatial versatility also allows it to host
community events and activities. The angles in
which the columns are positioned fulfill an aesthetic
purpose by drawing users’ attention to the altar in
the center of the area without obstructing the view.
In regards to the architecture, the architect conducted
extensive fieldwork to study the Karen
people’s homes, living spaces, and way of life.
The research also looked into various types of
vernacular architecture in Thailand’s northern
region in search of native techniques and wisdom
that could be applied to the project. Such an
endeavor led to the discovery that during the rainy
season, the Karen children are usually out in the
fields catching freshwater crabs. Having learned
about such a way of life, the architect drew inspiration
from the shape of a freshwater crab. The
oratory’s resemblance to a gigantic crab makes the
building more relatable for community members,
with a design language that effectively communicates
with the locals in a meaningful way.
