Rethinking Flexibility: A Lecture by Joshua Ramus 21 Rethinking Flexibility Divide and Conquer Joshua กล่าวถึงการเกิดแนวความคิดรูปแบบใหม่ๆ ว่า สถาปัตยกรรมสามารถปรับเปลี่ยนและยืดหยุ่นได้ ครั้งล่าสุด คือการก่อตัวของแนวความคิดแบบโมเดิร์น (Modernism) ซึ่งเกิดในช่วงศตวรรษที่ 19 และ 20 และพวกเรา สถาปนิก ได้ใช้ประโยชน์จากรากฐานแนวคิดนี้มาเป็นเวลาร่วมร้อยปี แต่ในช่วงเวลา 20-30 ปีให้หลังมานี้ วงการสถาปัตยกรรม ไม่สามารถสร้างแนวความคิดอะไรใหม่ๆ ได้เลย เป็นผล เนื่องมาจากสภาพเศรษฐกิจ และการขาดเงินลงทุน เนื่องด้วย นักลงทุนไม่ได้ใส่ใจที่จะปรับเปลี่ยนแนวความคิดและรูปแบบ ทางด้านสถาปัตยกรรมเท่าไรนัก อีกทั้งยังยึด ติดภาพจำา สเปซรูปแบบแบบเดิมๆ เช่น พิพิธภัณฑ์ควรเป็นห้อง สี่เหลี่ยมว่างเปล่าสีขาว และยึดติดกับความเฉพาะเจาะจง (specificity) ของประโยชน์ใช้สอย เปรียบเสมือนกุญแจมือ ที่ล็อคให้สถาปนิกไม่สามารถสรรค์สร้างอะไรใหม่ๆ ได้ แต่ ทาง Joshua และทีมงานเองกลับมองเห็นว่านี่เป็นโอกาสที่ จะพัฒนา และขัดเกลาภาพจำา รวมถึงความเฉพาะเจาะจง ที่มีอยู่เดิม ให้มีความซับซ้อน และใช้งานได้หลายรูปแบบ มากยิ่งขึ้น Joshua ได้ยกตัวอย่างผลงานที่สร้างชื่อเสียงชิ้นแรกให้ กับเขา ได้แก่ Seattle Public Library โดยทั่วไปแล้ว ภาพจำาของคนมักนึกถึงห้องสมุดเป็นที่สำาหรับเก็บหนังสือ แต่ในปี ค.ศ. 1999 ซึ่งเป็นยุคเฟื่องฟูของ direct search engine คนที่มาใช้งานห้องสมุดไม่จำาเป็นที่ต้องวิ่งเข้าหา บรรณารักษ์เป็นอย่างแรกอีกต่อไป ทำาอย่างไรผู้ใช้งานจึงจะ สามารถ เข้าถึงสิ่งที่เขามองหาได้โดยตรงผ่านการออกแบบ สถาปัตยกรรม อีกทั้งทำาอย่างไรจึงจะสามารถจัดเก็บจำานวน หนังสือ ที่เพิ่มจำานวนมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ได้ ผลลัพธ์จึงออกมา ในรูปแบบการแบ่ง (divide) ฟังก์ชั่นห้องสมุดเสียใหม่ ให้ เชื่อมต่อ กันทั้งหมดเสมือนทางลาดของลานจอดรถ พร้อม ทำากราฟิกบอกตำาแหน่งหนังสืออย่างชัดเจนให้เข้าถึงได้ ด้วยตนเอง ซึ่งเป็นการเอาชนะ (conquer) ภาพจำาของวิธี การจัดเก็บหนังสือของห้องสมุดแบบเดิมได้ อีกหนึ่งผลงานที่ถูกนำามายกตัวอย่าง ได้แก่ Elizabeth Quay 1.0 ตั้งอยู่ที่ริมน้ำาเมืองเพิร์ธ ประเทศออสเตรเลีย ที่สถาปนิกทำาลายภาพจำาของอาคาร mixed-use ทั่วไป โดยการนำาพื้นที่ public access เช่น ร้านอาหารและห้อง ประชุม ขนาดใหญ่ ไปอยู่ช่วงชั้นกลางๆ ของตึกแทนที่จะ เป็นชั้นพื้นดิน ทำาให้เจ้าของอาคารสามารถเพิ่มพื้นที่ขายใน ชั้นล่างๆ ได้ ในขณะเดียวกันยังสามารถดำาเนินการก่อสร้าง ชั้นล่าง ระหว่างรอการตัดสินใจว่าควรจะเป็นพื้นที่ใช้สอย อะไรต่อไป เนื่องจากการตัดสินใจขึ้นอยู่กับผลลัพธ์ของการ วิเคราะห์สภาพการณ์ของตลาดในช่วงเวลาที่อาคารใกล้ เปิดทำาการ Rethinking Flexibility Divide and Conquer Joshua describes the emergence of new concepts that architecture is adaptable and flexible, and the last one was the formation of Modernism, which took place in the 19th and 20th centuries; we, as architects, have been exploiting this foundation for hundreds of years. But during the past 20–30 years, architects have been unable to create new ideas due to economic conditions and a lack of investment. It was because investors ignored conceptual change and the style of architecture. They are also very attached to traditional, same old spaces. For example, a museum should be a square, empty white room. They are also attached to the specificity of functionality. It’s like a shackle that prevents architects from innovating. Still, he and his team saw this as an opportunity to improve and refine the image, including its existing specificity, to be more sophisticated and usable in many more ways. Joshua gives an example of his first famous work, the Seattle Public Library. People often think of libraries as places to store books, but in 1999, when the direct search engine boom took place, libraries no longer needed to run to a librarian first. The question is how users can get immediate access to what they are looking for through architectural design and how to store the increasing number of books with no limit. The result comes out of dividing the function of the new library to connect all together like a car park ramp and to provide a clear information graphic system to indicate the book’s position, allowing self-access for visitors. The design conquers the memory of the traditional way of storing books in libraries. Another interesting example is Elizabeth Quay 1.0, located on the waterfront in Perth, Australia. In this project, REX has conquered the conventional image of a typical mixed-use building by moving public access areas such as restaurants and large conference rooms to the middle instead of the ground level. It allows the building owner to increase the area for sale on the ground floor while still being able to continue the construction of the ground floor while waiting for a decision on what space should be used next.
