General specification
Cell cavity
Heartwood is the most useful portion of a tree. The optimal
heartwood should be devoid of knots, which may fracture
or fall off. This may directly affect the mechanical properties
of the lumber material in structural engineering. It has an
undeniable impact on the durability and attractiveness of
buildings. Moreover, working with these knots, even if they
are not broken or falling off, may be a hindrance for certain
types of work, thereby influencing the quality of the work.
The tree’s tendrils are its knots. Lumber from aged pre-falling
trees and of larger size has more processing options by
avoiding the near sapwood and bark, resulting in fewer knot
defects or non-knot appearances, or the knot with no defect
that may cause significant damage (the circumference of
the trunk in the middle of the felled tree trunk is the size of
the felled tree). Other physical characteristics of defective
heartwood include moth holes and traces of heartwood
damage caused by various types of insect borers; fungal
deterioration such as rot, mold, or discoloration; heartwood
cracks caused by moisture exchange at the end check or
surface check, etc.
Sapwood is the vegetative portion of the tree when it is cut
down. It contains xylems, the vessels or conduits that transport
water and nutrients, which are still active for plant development.
Sapwood is soft and an ideal sustenance, growth, and
reproduction source for wood-destroying organisms. Even
the sapwood of teak, which is reputed to be resistant to
wood pests and insect borers, has been found to be the
most susceptible to infestation by wood pests. In addition
to being harmed by insects, the wood’s lower density effects
the surface finish in architecture and decoration, and the
sapwood loses its mechanical properties as it ages. In addition
to these mechanical property restrictions, there are additional
mechanical property restrictions that, according to the general
construction requirements and specifications, identify sapwood
as a defect component and prohibit its use in structural
applications.
Before using wood materials, it is essential to determine
whether or not they must be cured. It must first be understood
why drying the wood is necessary. When wood is cut
down, it dehydrates until its moisture content matches that
of its surroundings. The process of dehydration begins with
unrestricted water in the cell cavity. At this stage, the weight
of the wood decreases, but there is no change in size or shape
(the shape change is caused by the dimensional imbalance
changes in the radial plane and the tangent plane) until the
wood reaches the FSP (fiber saturation point), or the point of
intracellular water saturation. The intercellular space’s free
water is discharged. Saturated, bonded water in the cell begins
to be released until it is gone. In addition to the change in
weight, the evaporation of the saturated water within the cell
causes the cell to begin to change in size and shape. The
