A high-tech flooring prototype in Union<br />
South, Wisconsin, has been installed<br />
by a research team at the University of<br />
Wisconsin-Madison. The 96-squarefoot<br />
rectangle of modified wood flooring<br />
panels harvests the energy of footsteps<br />
and converts it into electricity. The wood<br />
pulp, a cheap, abundant, and renewable<br />
waste material, is central to the technology’s<br />
function. The charge is transmitted<br />
through embedded wires, which<br />
can power lights or charge batteries.<br />
The initial test in the lab shows that the<br />
technology works for millions of cycles<br />
without any problem. The team haven’t<br />
converted those numbers into years of<br />
life for a floor yet, but with appropriate<br />
design, the technology expectedly can<br />
outlast the floor itself<br />
