ไม้แต่ละท่อนจะมีคุณลักษณะทั้งเชิงความงามและเชิงกลเป็นของ<br />
ตนเอง ช่างที่มีฝีมือจะสามารถดึงลักษณะเฉพาะของไม้แต่ละชิ้น<br />
ออกมาได้ เช่นในตัวอย่างของเรือนชาวไต เมืองกายา จังหวัด<br />
ทัญฮว้า ประเทศเวียดนาม ที่มีลักษณะเป็นห้องโล่งหนึ่งห้อง<br />
มีพื้นที่ว่างต่อเนื่องไม่ได้มีการกั้นผนัง มีช่วงโครงสร้างที่กว้าง<br />
ในแนวรูปตัดตามขวาง (transversal frame) ช่างเลือกใช้ไม้<br />
หนึ่งท่อนที่มีหน้าตัดขนาดใหญ่มาพาดช่วงเพื่อทำาหน้าที่เป็นขื่อ<br />
(tie beam) ในโครงสร้างหลังคา จากช่วงเสาที่กว้างและน้ำาหนัก<br />
ในตัวของขื่อเอง ช่างจึงเลือกใช้ไม้ที่มีลักษณะโค้งขึ้น เมื่อสังเกต<br />
แนวของเสี้ยนไม้โดยละเอียด พบว่ามีความโค้งตามธรรมชาติ<br />
ซึ่งไม้ที่มีเสี้ยนวิ่งในลักษณะนี้มีความสามารถในการรับแรงใน<br />
แนวตั้งฉากกับเสี้ยนได้ดีกว่าไม้ที่มีลักษณะปกติทั่วไป สะท้อนถึง<br />
ความสามารถของช่างไม้ที่จะฉกฉวยใช้ประโยชน์จากคุณสมบัติ<br />
เชิงกลเฉพาะของไม้ชิ้นนั้นได้สูง<br />
Each timber possesses unique aesthetic and mechanical<br />
qualities. An experienced craftsman can exploit aforementionedpotential.<br />
In the example of a Tai house in<br />
Kaya township, Thanh Hoa Province, Vietnam, the house<br />
charactered by a basic open room with no walls dividing<br />
the space that resulted from relative wide span along<br />
the transverse frame. A large timber cross-section is used<br />
as a tie beam in the roof structure by the craftsman.<br />
Based on the house span and the weight of the tie beam,<br />
the craftsman used slightly curved log. Upon a closer<br />
examination on its grain, we found that it is naturally<br />
curved. Its mechanical quality can resist shear force perpendicular<br />
to the grain better than the straight one. This<br />
demonstrates the craftsman’s ability to take advantage<br />
of the wood’s highly specific mechanical properties.<br />
