SHER MAKER
“We persuade customers to invest in materials. Instead of using
whatever materials were available, we chose those that could be
sourced locally or from nearby areas. Meanwhile, the creators of
these materials are actual customers of the gas station. A project
such as this depicts how design can be utilized to help propel the
local economy.”
Since then, the ceramic factory has been asked to collaborate with several other design studios,
and they have even expanded their services with the Raw Material Unit, which specializes in
building cladding materials. Meanwhile, Sher Maker obtained a new set of data from their
extensive research on various groups of ceramics and earth in Chiang Mai. It demonstrates
how the studio’s work method, which focuses on research and experimentation, frequently
leads to the opening of a new door that grants access to a new body of knowledge. The approach
also benefits both the studio and their collaborators in both direct and indirect ways,
something Patcharada wishes the studio would continue to do.
Thematic Pavilion
“At the Architect Expo 2023, we had the opportunity to design a pavilion for EDL, the laminate
company. It was one of the thematic pavilions, and we created the design with the idea that
it didn’t have to be visually stunning, but it should include and communicate a clear message.
The idea was to build a zero-waste pavilion, which was really simple and straightforward. It
birthed this boxy and airy framework inside a closed-off space with slots for the laminates to
be loosely inserted without the need for drilling, fastening, or even the use of adhesive. The
concept was inspired by the way laminates are packaged for shipment. By factoring that into
the design, we were able to create a pavilion that could successfully display the laminates
without causing any damage to them, while the materials could later be turned into samples or
sold at the shop display model pricing. The structure’s timber components were disassembled
and reassembled into shipping crates for transporting goods.
The studio’s design language frequently emphasizes work processes and the natural properties
of materials or technologies. The delivery is carried out through an efficient circular approach,
exhibiting an attempt to bring forth the potential and flexibility of the materials used. Such design
language can be found in the design of the entryway to Boonma Café.
The café’s design aims to showcase the site’s unique surroundings, highlighting its potential
to generate one-of-a-kind spatial experiences rather than the tactility of physical objects.
The café’s entrance was designed with a curtain wall that formed a semi-circular enclosure.
To reflect the surrounding scenery, the original façade was removed and replaced with a
mirror. Because of the site’s limited space, the design avoided interfering with the current
setting, instead opting for the intervention of the preexisting landscape, making it appear
wider and serving to enhance spectacular spatial experiences for users.
Processing Research and Open Data
The core, or perhaps the most visible, component of Sher Maker’s work method is how the
studio positions itself on the foundation, which begins with a true understanding of what
they were planning to develop before commencing the ‘making’ process. While that is
something that any design studio or line of work would also do, Sher Maker’s methodology
and approach to gaining a good grasp of the subject matter with which they are working
generally overlap with the actual practice and ‘making’ part of the process. It results in a set
of data that is placed in a given direction and perspective, which finally leads to a specific
way of accessing the body of knowledge.
