das Bild von Europa auf dem Stier verwendet. Die fächerübergreifende literaturwissenschaftliche
Ringvorlesung fragt danach, welche Rolle die Literatur, die
über die Jahrhunderte hinweg ein differenziertes Reflexionsmedium globaler
Entwicklungen darstellte, in der Konstruktion der kulturellen wie der politischen
Idee von Europa spielte und immer noch spielt. Zum einen wird danach gefragt,
wie Europa in der Literatur imaginiert und figuriert wird, zum anderen geht es
aber auch darum, ob und in welcher Weise sich die Literatur Europas als europäisch
begreift. Gibt es ein Europa der Literatur oder hat Yoko Tawada recht, wenn
sie einem ihrer Texte den Titel gibt „Eigentlich darf man es niemandem sagen,
aber Europa gibt es nicht“?

This course covers the basics about English pronunciation. You will learn how the
speech sounds of English are articulated and in which way they can combine to
make English syllables, words and larger stretches of speech. Moreover, you will
be introduced to those aspects of spoken English that are not represented in
writing: the rules of stress and accent and those of English intonation (the usage
and meaning of tones). The course also provides an introduction to the International
Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), the transcription system for the pronunciation of a
language.

The Eightheenth-Century Literary
Marketplace and the Rise of the
Novel

The 18 th -century literary marketplace was dynamic and, in some ways, innovative.
In particular, the novel as we know it transitioned from near-insignificance in
1700 to between 80 and 100 new novels being published a year in 1790 (cf.
Feather 2006, 121). From a book historical perspective, we will consider influential
works of fiction by – among others – Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, and Samuel
Richardson, all of whom helped establish the novel as a seemingly “authentic”
narrative genre. We will go beyond the texts and analyze the relationship between
the publishing and writing the new genre and finding its reading public.
We will also focus on phenomena in the 18 th -century literary marketplace which
are very similar to today’s trends, e.g. the craze triggered by Samuel Richardson’s
epistolary novel Pamela, which inspired countless unauthorized parodies and
