Potential Theistic <strong>Explanation</strong>s 99<br />

as a potential explanation of some state of affairs only if we cannot conceive<br />

of any better way in which the posited divine goal could have been<br />

attained. If we cannot make any of these judgements, as sceptics would<br />

argue, then there can be no theistic explanations. But even if we can,<br />

we can have only a modest degree of confi dence in the outcome. We can<br />

never be confi dent that any particular theistic hypothesis has explana<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

force. It follows that even a moderate degree of scepticism—such as that<br />

urged by many theists themselves—will undermine our confi dence in a<br />

proposed theistic explanation.
