Basic Instructional Skills (IS-265)<br />

The purpose of this 90-minute course is to prepare<br />

the participant to assist with State-delivered emergency<br />

management training. This course provides<br />

a foundation from which participants can develop<br />

or enhance their instructional delivery skills within<br />

a classroom setting. This course is not designed to<br />

teach how to design training. Rather, the focus of<br />

this course is how to present an existing lesson plan<br />

or training materials.<br />

Selection Criteria: Members of State and local emergency<br />

management disciplines. Recommended for<br />

members of State and local emergency management<br />

disciplines who assist in the teaching of FEMA- or<br />

State-developed classroom training.<br />

Prerequisites:<br />

Required: Must have responsibility for teaching a<br />

portion of a FEMA- or State-developed course.<br />

Anticipating Hazardous Weather and<br />

Community Risk (Web-based) (IS-271)<br />

This course will help you, the emergency manager,<br />

anticipate and prepare for hazardous weather more<br />

effectively by:<br />

• Enhancing your ability to recognize potentially<br />

hazardous weather and flooding situations and<br />

how they may affect your community.<br />

• Familiarizing you with National Weather Service<br />

(NWS) products so that you understand how to<br />

use and interpret forecasts.<br />

• Encouraging you to develop a partnership<br />

with the NWS well in advance of a threat. This<br />

course has four main sections: Weather, Hazards,<br />

Forecasting, and Warning Partnership.<br />

Retrofitting Flood-Prone Residential<br />

Buildings (IS-279)<br />

This course is recommended prior to attendance at<br />

<strong>EMI</strong>’s more technical resident course of the same title<br />

(E279). The course provides the users with an overview<br />

of retrofitting, the National Flood Insurance<br />

Program (NFIP), and minimum requirements of<br />

floodplain management as it relates to retrofitting<br />

methods, and parameters that influence retrofitting<br />

decisions.<br />

The course format is programmed instruction<br />

which allows you to work at your own pace. This<br />

course can be downloaded from the Independent<br />

Study web site and the test can be completed and<br />

submitted online.<br />

The Role of Voluntary Agencies in<br />

<strong>Emergency</strong> <strong>Management</strong> (IS-288)<br />

the vital role that voluntary agencies play as key partners<br />

the entire emergency management cycle (i.e., mitigation,<br />

preparedness, response, and recovery). This<br />
