After nearly six years of warfare, the Germans surrendered in May 1945, and<br />

the War Department redirected its efforts toward winning in the Pacific. But World<br />

War II ended abruptly in August after the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima<br />

and Nagasaki, ushering in a new era of warfare. <strong>Field</strong> artillery had been a decisive<br />

factor in the Allied victory, prompting Third <strong>Army</strong> commander General George S.<br />

Patton, Jr., to later remark: “I do not have to tell you who won the war. You know<br />

our artillery did.” 63<br />
