Survival Rate to Grade Five <strong>and</strong> Seven<br />

Survival rate is an <strong>of</strong>ficial indicator used to track progress toward efficiency <strong>and</strong> effectiveness <strong>and</strong> it<br />

refers to the percentage <strong>of</strong> a cohort <strong>of</strong> pupils who enter the first grade <strong>of</strong> primary education <strong>and</strong> reach<br />

a certain grade, regardless <strong>of</strong> repetition. Figure 4.21 shows survival rates to grate five <strong>and</strong> seven for<br />

the last two financial years;<br />

Survival rate to primary seven improved in the period under review. In FY 2010/11, 31.2% (Male;<br />

32%; Female 31%) <strong>of</strong> the pupils who enrolled in primary one in 2004 survived to grade seven. In FY<br />

2011/12 the survival rate improved by 1.1%age point to the tune <strong>of</strong> 32.3% (Male 32.8%; Female 31.8%).<br />

Likewise, survival rate to grade five also improved by 1 percentage point from 58 percent in 2010/11<br />

to 59 percent in 2011/12.<br />

Primary Seven Completion Rate<br />

Primary Seven completion rate is the percentage <strong>of</strong> pupils completing the last year <strong>of</strong> primary school<br />

(Grade seven). It is calculated by taking the total number <strong>of</strong> c<strong>and</strong>idates registered for Primary leaving<br />

examinations divided by the total number <strong>of</strong> children <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial graduation age (12 years). Figure 4.22<br />

shows primary seven completion rates for the period under review.<br />
