The grades for the four subjects are then averaged to obtain the overall grade referred to as Division 1<br />

to 4, in which Division 1 is the best. The Division awarded to a c<strong>and</strong>idate is determined by the average<br />

examination result as well as the result for each individual subject.<br />

A c<strong>and</strong>idate who fails to satisfy the conditions for the award <strong>of</strong> Division 4 is considered ‘ungraded’.<br />

Figure 4.12 shows the Primary Leaving Examination Pass rate FY 2010/11­2011/12.<br />

In FY 2012, learner’s achievements remained relatively the same. In FY 2010/11, a total <strong>of</strong> 488,745<br />

c<strong>and</strong>idates sat for PLE exams <strong>of</strong> which 418,479 (88%) obtained at least division four while in FY<br />

2011/12 the number <strong>of</strong> c<strong>and</strong>idates sitting PLE increased to 490,374 c<strong>and</strong>idates <strong>of</strong> which 431,529<br />

(86.2%) passed. Therefore, the PLE pass rate declined by 1.8%age points.<br />

(vii) Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) performance index 2010/11­2011/12<br />

C<strong>and</strong>idates are weighted according to the grade <strong>of</strong> passing with the highest grade (Div one) carrying<br />

the highest weight, then the c<strong>and</strong>idates in each category are multiplied by the respective weight, then<br />

the actual weight is summed up <strong>and</strong> expressed as a ratio <strong>of</strong> the expected weight for maximum<br />

performance (number <strong>of</strong> c<strong>and</strong>idates that sat multiplied by the weight for the highest grade). A high<br />

performance index indicates that many c<strong>and</strong>idates passed exams in good grades in relation to those<br />

that sat. While a low performance index indicates that few pupils passed their exams in upper grades<br />

in relation to the number <strong>of</strong> c<strong>and</strong>idates that sat. Figure 4.13 displays the Primary Leaving Examination<br />

performance index FY 2010/11­2011/12.<br />
