(i)<br />
Progress <strong>and</strong> Main Achievements<br />
Monitoring <strong>and</strong> support supervision<br />
The secondary <strong>Education</strong> Subsector has continued to provide administrative support to secondary<br />
schools in various areas. During the period under review, a total <strong>of</strong> 749 (45 percent) USE schools (both<br />
government <strong>and</strong> private were provided with administrative support <strong>and</strong> supervision.<br />
This was in addition to the routine monitoring <strong>and</strong> inspection provided by support teams on school<br />
based procurement, civil works <strong>and</strong> accountability<br />
(ii)<br />
Procurement <strong>and</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> instructional materials<br />
The sub sector supplied 5400 science kits to 1342 private <strong>and</strong> government USE schools <strong>and</strong> supplied<br />
chemicals to 5,101 private & government USE schools in the 4 regions country wide to facilitate<br />
conducting <strong>of</strong> UCE science practical examinations.<br />
In addition, a total <strong>of</strong> 2,000,656 text books were distributed to USE schools in the core subject areas.<br />
(iii)<br />
Continued implementation <strong>of</strong> the digital science project <strong>and</strong> strengthening ICT initiatives in<br />
secondary schools<br />
Further priority was given to enhancing creativity <strong>and</strong> innovativeness in the teaching <strong>of</strong> sciences<br />
through digital science <strong>and</strong> other ICT initiatives. In addition to the 200 schools under the Digital<br />
Science project, another 26 secondary schools have been supported with ICT materials which bring<br />
the total number <strong>of</strong> schools supported in ICT initiatives to 226. Further more, 2297science <strong>and</strong><br />
mathematics teachers were trained in using digital science as a pedagogical tool.<br />
Other secondary schools which include Kololo S.S, St. Henry’s College Kitovu, Kitende SS, Kiira<br />
College Butiki, <strong>and</strong> Bishop Comboni Kambuga have been supported to have functional ICT<br />
laboratories. While in collaboration with UCC, an additional 350 school ICT laboratories have been<br />
established with atleast ten (10) computers per school.<br />
The subsector continued to computerize <strong>and</strong> updated the secondary school Teacher data for the IPPS<br />
system; conduct the National Secondary Science Fair; <strong>and</strong>, make payments for adjudication <strong>and</strong><br />
trophies.<br />
(iv)<br />
Teacher training <strong>and</strong> development<br />
Under this arrangement, the sub sector conducted training for 110 PTC tutors, &164 student council<br />
members, for the West Nile sub region; inducted 262 head teachers <strong>and</strong> deputy head teachers <strong>of</strong> the 66<br />
newly Grant Aided secondary schools <strong>and</strong> 121 Senior Accounts Assistants; Facilitated 14 SESEMAT<br />
National trainers; trained 2,412 science <strong>and</strong> mathematics teachers; <strong>and</strong> Facilitated the NASSHU<br />
national conference.<br />
(v)<br />
Implementation <strong>of</strong> policies, laws <strong>and</strong> guidelines, <strong>and</strong> strategies<br />
Under this strategy, the private schools department printed <strong>and</strong> distributed 2000 copies <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>Education</strong> Act 2008 to schools.<br />
