Pupil Teacher Ratio (PTR)<br />
PTR gives an indication <strong>of</strong> contact between pupils <strong>and</strong> caregivers in a classroom. A low PTR implies<br />
high chances <strong>of</strong> contact between caregivers <strong>and</strong> pupils hence teachers will have enough time to check<br />
homework <strong>and</strong> class work. Figure 4.6 below shows the pupil teacher ratio in preprimary schools in<br />
Ug<strong>and</strong>a;<br />

In FY 2011/12, the PTR in preschool schools remained relatively the same at 34:1 in FY 2010/11 <strong>and</strong><br />
35:1 in FY 2011/12.<br />

Pupil Latrine Stance Ratio<br />
The average number <strong>of</strong> pupils sharing a latrine stance in a school is vital as far as the quality <strong>of</strong><br />
sanitation in schools in concerned. Table 4.22 below shows the number <strong>of</strong> latrine stances in preprimary<br />
schools;<br />

In financial year 2010/11, there were a total <strong>of</strong> 5,946 pupils’ latrine stances in all preprimary schools<br />
translating into a pupil latrine stance ratio <strong>of</strong> 59:1. In the period under review, the number <strong>of</strong> latrine<br />
stances increased to 5,960. Consequently, the pupil latrine stance ratio improved by 1 point to 58:1 in<br />
FY 2011/12.<br />
