Construction <strong>of</strong> lecture blocks at Namasagali <strong>and</strong> Busitema campuses has reached its final stages<br />
(ro<strong>of</strong>ing has been done). By close <strong>of</strong> May 2012, UGX 288m had been spent;<br />
At Makerere University Completion <strong>of</strong> the 4000sqm <strong>of</strong> additional space phase 2 <strong>and</strong> furnish<br />
phase 2 <strong>of</strong> the main library; <strong>and</strong> Rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> the department <strong>of</strong> Botany ro<strong>of</strong>;<br />
In addition, construction <strong>of</strong> 1500 sq.m <strong>of</strong> Incubator facility commenced;<br />
Reconstruction <strong>of</strong> Nyabyeya forest Reserve Hostel;<br />
Construction <strong>of</strong> the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Applied Science at Kihumuro Campus Mbarara University <strong>of</strong><br />
Technology is at Level 3;<br />
Completion <strong>of</strong> a new Library complex at Makerere Business School; <strong>and</strong>,<br />
Construction <strong>of</strong> classroom, laboratory <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice block started in April 2012.Also started the<br />
renovation <strong>of</strong> the hostel.<br />
(c) Results/outcomes<br />
During the period under review the subsector achieved the following outcomes;<br />
(i)<br />
Student enrolment<br />
During the period under review, the sector registered a 10% increment in the total number <strong>of</strong> students<br />
enrolled in Tertiary Institutions from 179,569 (100,891 male; 78,738 female) in FY 2010/11 to 196,570<br />
(110,255 male; 86,135 female) in FY 2011/12 indicated in Table 4.18 below.<br />

(ii)<br />
Gross enrolment ratio<br />
The Gross Enrolment Ratio for Tertiary Institutions improved by 0.3% points. In 2012, the estimated<br />
tertiary going population was 3,602,966* (UBOS 2012) against tertiary enrolment <strong>of</strong> 196,570 students<br />
which translates into a Gross Enrolment Ratio <strong>of</strong> 5.4% as compared to 5.1% in FY 2010/11 as shown in<br />
Table 4.19 below.<br />

(iii)<br />
Gender gap in tertiary institutions<br />
In order to foster increased access to tertiary education level, Ug<strong>and</strong>a has for the past two decades<br />
pursued affirmative action with regard to admission to public universities <strong>and</strong> other tertiary<br />
institutions. This policy has among others involved an award <strong>of</strong> 1.5 points to all female c<strong>and</strong>idates to<br />
assist them gain tertiary admission.<br />
ESSAPR FY 2011/12 to inform the 19 th ESSR – OCTOBER 2012
