BTVET institutions under UPPET<br />

Universal Post Primary <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> Training program was started in BTVET institutions with a<br />

total <strong>of</strong> 62 BTVET institutions (46 government: 16 private) in 2007. This number has been reduced to<br />

58 (42 government: 16 private) because 4 <strong>of</strong> the government institutions were elevated from technical<br />

schools to technical institutions. These institutions include: Rwampara Farm Institute; Kitagata Farm<br />

Institute; Rwetanga Farm Institute; Ssese Farm Institute. Since inception <strong>of</strong> the program, the number<br />

<strong>of</strong> participating institutions has increased with government taking a percentage share <strong>of</strong> 60% out <strong>of</strong><br />

the total UPPET BTVET institutions as indicated in Figure 4.4.<br />

Others institutions are: Bukalagi Technical Institute; St. Kizito Kitovu; <strong>and</strong> Kakira Community<br />

Institute. BTVET institutions have increased to 155, including the 8 Technical Institutions under<br />

Presidential Pledges.<br />

Enrolment <strong>of</strong> students under the UPPET program<br />

Implementation <strong>of</strong> Universal Post Primary <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> Training program was started in BTVET<br />

institutions with a total <strong>of</strong> 3,024 eligible students in year one <strong>of</strong> which 2,365 were male <strong>and</strong> 659 female.<br />

Since then, the program has been exp<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> in this year (2012) 7,932, students enrolled under the<br />

program.<br />

Gender gap<br />

Following the launch <strong>of</strong> the gender education sector policy which advocates for equal access to<br />

education, a number <strong>of</strong> female students have been encouraged to compete favorably with boys in<br />

many BTVET institutions.<br />
