In 1991 a new type of lighting
concept was developed for Frankfurt
Airport by the renowned lighting
designer Christian Bartenbach. The
requirement was to create a
uniformly lit apron, but with
restricted column height.
A particularly critical factor was the
shielding of direct glare from the
pilots’ view and their ability to adapt
to the darkness.
The psychology of vision was
examined closely and used as a basis
for the concept. The result of this was
secondary reflector technology. With
this technology it is possible, not only
to reduce the column height from
30m with conventional lighting to
21m by using this system, but also to
increase the lighting level and
uniformity without causing glare.
The main principle is to direct the
light from a narrow beam high
output projector or group of
projectors. The mirror changes the
circular output beam from the
projector into the ideal distribution
for the task. The beam is scattered by
the convex mirrors, therefore
reducing glare. The mirror
appearance is said to have the starry
sky effect: a myriad of very small, very
bright light sources giving very little
glare.
The secondary reflector system was
developed further for the SiNARIO
range, for workplace lighting in
demanding offices. The patented
lighting technology used creates a
highly effective system with a
shielded lamp narrow beam
projector.

and mirrors as separate items to
create various architecturally
integrated solutions.
